Tigers Take Final Game of Series over William & Mary

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team defeated William & Mary 9-5 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play at Schuerholz Park Sunday afternoon.
 
Towson (15-34, 4-20) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Bryce Frederick's two-run homer. Cristino followed in the second with a two-run jack of his own to make it a 4-0 game. The Tigers pushed one run across on three hits in the third to extend the lead. William & Mary (30-19, 13-11) hit a three-run home run to left in the fourth to cut the Tiger lead to 5-3. In the fifth, a leadoff home run cut the deficit to one for W&M. A single in the seventh with runners on tied the game for the Tribe at five apiece. In the eighth, Curnane's double with runners on and Frederick's second home run of the day provided some insurance for the Tigers to make it 9-5. With no runs scoring in the top of the ninth, it came to a 9-5 final at Schuerholz Park.
 
Key Stats:
  • Third baseman Bryce Frederick finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with three RBI, two home runs and three runs scored. Catcher John Cristino went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run.
  • Towson reliever Cam Clark (1-2) recorded the win with one hit allowed and one strikeout collected in two innings of work. Max Simpson and Nate Nabholz each recorded four strikeouts in their stints today.
  • William & Mary reliever Owen Pierce (4-5) took the loss with four earned runs allowed on two hits in 0.2 innings pitched, recording two strikeouts. Center fielder Joe Delossantos finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI and a home run.
 
How it Happened:
  • The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first courtesy of Bryce Frederick's home run with a runner on base.
  • Elijah Dickerson led off the second inning with a single up the middle. John Cristino followed that with a home run of his own to center field to make it a 4-0 game.
  • Cristino hit a single up the middle in the third with runners on first and second to advance each. An errant throw from the second baseman allowed the runner on third to reach.
  • After back-to-back singles to start the inning, Delossantos hit a three-run homer to left field to make it a 5-3 game in the fourth.
  • The Tribe got another back on Ben Williamson's leadoff home run to left field in the fifth inning.
  • With runners on first and second, a single to left plated another run for the Tribe to tie the game at five.
  • In the home half of the eighth, Curnane's double down the right field line with runners on first and second scored two to give the Tigers the lead back. Frederick followed with his second home run of the day to the batter's eye in center field for a 9-5 score.
  • The Tribe went down in short order in the ninth for a 9-5 final at Schuerholz Park.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Bryce Frederick notched his second two home run performance this season and now leads the team with 11 home runs and 46 RBI.
  • Jeremy Wagner extended his hitting streak to a team-high 18 games with a 1-for-4 afternoon. He has reached base safely in 23 consecutive appearances.
  • Cam Clark recorded the win in his 94th appearance at Towson, which is second all-time in program history.
 
On Deck:
The Tigers go on the road Tuesday evening to face cross-town foe UMBC at 6 p.m. in Catonsville.
