EMMITSBURG, Md. – Towson women's soccer used a strong defensive effort and a pair of first half goals in a 3-0 win against Mount St. Mary's on Thursday afternoon. Senior
Nia Christopher led the way with a goal and an assist in the win.
Towson (3-0-0) scored a pair of goals in a three-minute span to take care of the Mountaineers (0-2-1).
Jasmine Hamid and
Phoebe Canoles got the Tigers started, with
Nia Christopher adding a second-half goal for a 3-0 win. The Tigers are 3-0 to start the season for the first time since 2007 and just the third time in program history.
Key Stats:
- Hamid, Canoles and Christopher each scored their second goals of the season. Christopher added an assist.
- Reese Borden, Demi Pierre and Alexandra Rush also had assists in the win.
- Riley Melendez made two saves for her second shutout of the season.
- Towson outshot The Mount 20-4 and had eight corner kicks.
How It Happened:
- Jasmine Hamid had a good look early in the first half. Reese Borden sent a ball in off a corner kick, but Hamid's header just went wide.
- The Tigers would continue to apply pressure early. Hamid would finally break through in the 16th minute. Hamid headed home a corner kick from Reese Borden to make it 1-0 early.
- Phoebe Canoles would put one home just two minutes later. She took a pass from Nia Christopher and Demi Pierre and slotted it home to make it 2-0 Tigers.
- Demi Pierre had a couple of good looks late, but her shots were stopped as the Tigers took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Towson held The Mount to just one shot, outshooting the Mountaineers 10-1 in the first half.
- Mount St. Mary's came out early in the second half getting a shot on goal, but Riley Melendez was up to the challenge to make the save.
- Nia Christopher would make it a 3-0 lead in the 53rd minute. She took a pass from Alexandra Rush and put it home for her second of the season.
- Jasmine Hamid would get a look on goal in the 67th minute, making a move at the top of the box. However, her attempt just curved wide of the net.
- Phoebe Canoles had a look late in the half, but her shot went high with 10 minutes to go.
- The Tiger defense would remain stout the whole way, as the Tigers defeated Mount St. Mary's 3-0 on Thursday afternoon.

- Nia Christopher increased her streak to three straight games with a point. She now has 68 points for her career.
- Christopher moved to within a goal of Emily Banes for first all-time with her goal in the 53rd minute.
- The Tigers are 3-0 for the first time to start the season since 2007. Towson also started 3-0 in 2000.
- Riley Melendez recorded her second consecutive shutout and now has 21 in her career.
