Field Hockey Edges Saint Louis in Gerzabek Salem’s First Road Win

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team's three-goal first quarter secured a 3-2 victory over the Saint Louis Billikens, marking Katie Gerzabek Salem's first road victory at the helm of the Tigers.
 
Sarah Hatfield scored two goals while Annie Keele recorded the first of her collegiate career. Madisyn Howard and Megan Popp each picked up assists in the game, their firsts of the season.

How it Happened:
  • In the sixth minute, Madisyn Howard found Annie Keele for the score, giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
  • Just over two minutes later, Shaya Dry tied it up for the Billikens.
  • The Tigers closed out the first period with two more goals, each from Sarah Hatfield, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead through one quarter of play. Megan Popp assisted on the first of the two.
  • The goalies for each team exchanged saves in the second before Brooke Mason put one past Tessa Scheenstra off a deflection, assisted by Ava Calma, to make it a 3-2 game.
  • The Tigers got three shots on goal in the third quarter, all saved by Saint Louis' Kerri O'Donnell.
  • Towson remained stout on defense in the fourth quarter, holding the Billikens to one shot off target through the first half of the period.
  • Yellow cards were assessed to Popp and Georgia Beachley in the 55th minute, giving the Billikens a two-up advantage. No shots were registered in the final five minutes of play, giving Towson a 3-2 victory in regulation.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Keele scored the first goal of her collegiate career to put Towson on the board in the first quarter. She has recorded at least one point in all three games this season.
  • Marks the second multi-goal game of Sarah Hatfield's Towson career (2G vs. Quinnipiac on 9/25/22). Hatfield has totaled more than half the points through three games this season (six) than she registered over the entire 2022 season (11).
  • Popp recorded her first collegiate assist on Hatfield's first of two goals. Howard picked up her second assist in 26 starts for Towson.
  • This win was the first road victory for head coach Katie Gerzabek Salem at the helm of the Tigers.
