Towson Football Knocks Off No. 14/17 New Hampshire in Overtime Road Victory

DURHAM, N.H. – The Towson University football team scored a touchdown with 20 seconds left to force overtime, completing the upset bid with a walk-off touchdown to win 54-51 at No. 14/17 New Hampshire.

Towson (2-3, 1-1 CAA) led by seven at the half and went up by 10 with a long drive to open the third quarter, but UNH (2-3, 0-2 CAA) responded with three touchdowns to take the lead.

Down 48-41 with 1:46 to play and 90 yards to go, Towson drove the length of the field and scored with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Lukkas Londono with 20 seconds left.  UNH got two plays for a combined 29 yards to set up a final field goal attempt, which was blocked by Antonio Howard to force overtime.

After UNH kicked a field goal in overtime, Towson set up third and goal on the UNH 2.  Devin Matthews burst through the line for the two-yard touchdown and the Towson victory.

Towson earns its highest-scoring game since having 56 points in a 49-point win vs. Bucknell on Oct. 19, 2019.

Key Stats:
  • This is the highest scoring Towson game in history, with the two sides combining for 105 points.
  • Towson dominated the run game with 309 rushing yards to UNH's 128.  In total, Towson had 561 total offensive yards to UNH's 468, while the Wildcats had the advantage in passing 340-252.
  • The Tigers had a pair of 116-yard rushers: Devin Matthews averaged 6.4 yards a carry with two touchdowns while D'Ago Hunter averaged 6.8 yards a rush.
  • Quarterback Nathan Kent was 21-for-34 in the air with five touchdowns and a pick, adding 68 yards on the ground.  His top target was Carter Runyon, who had five catches for 83 yards and a score at tight end.
  • Hunter racked up 324 all-purpose yards: 116 rushing, 71 receiving and 137 kick returns.
  • On defense, Dorian Davis led all Tigers with nine tackles.  Dion Crews-Harris had six tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.
  • For UNH, Max Brosmer was 28-for-43 for 340 yards and two touchdowns, passing to Caleb Burke for seven receptions, 84 yards and a score.  Dylan Laube ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns.  Ryan Toscano led all players with 13 tackles, adding a sack.
How it Happened
  • UNH started with the ball and looked mainly to the run, but converted a third and seven on a 19-yard pass towards the sideline, then had another third down conversion on a Dylan Laube rush for 12 yards up the middle.  At the Towson 5, Ernie Smith forced a fumble near the goal line, but UNH recovered in the end zone for the touchdown.  UNH converted a two-point conversion to lead 8-0 with 9:04 left in the 1st.
  • D'Ago Hunter spearheaded Towson's offense on the first offensive drive, rushing for 11 yards, making a catch for 10 yards then bursting for six more.  Nathan Kent got Towson near midfield on a scramble up the middle, but an interception ended the drive as UNH got the ball back on its own 12.
  • UNH came back down the field, getting a 20-yard catch and run, but near midfield, Jakari Patterson stripped the ball from Max Brosmer's hands, then Samuel Obiang recovered to give Towson the ball on the UNH 46.  Towson made use of this, using a 29-yard drop-off pass to Hunter to get to the UNH 7.  Devin Matthews finished the drive with a sprint and score to the end zone on a dive.  Towson trailed 8-6 with 1:03 left in the first.
  • A great Caden Williams kickoff that bounced on the one-yard line was returned just to the UNH 12. The Towson defense allowed just one yard as a punt yielded only 15 yards on the kick catch interference.  With 13:44 in the second, a Nathan Kent pass to the end zone was brought in with one hand by Zay Perkins for the 15-yard touchdown and a 13-8 Towson lead.
  • Dion Crews-Harris began the next drive with a 10-yard sack, but UNH passes of 24 and 42 yards got the home team into the red zone.  After a seven-yard catch, Towson stopped any more progress, with Charles Peeples breaking up a pass in the end zone.  A UNH field goal of 26 yards made it 13-11 Towson, 9:54 in the second.
  • Kent drove Towson down the field next drive, using a UNH pass interference and a 24-yard catch across the middle to Carter Runyon for 24 yards to convert a third and 18.  Matthews then found holes up the gut for seven and eight yards, followed by Brady McElhaney getting a pair of catches for six yards each.  Towson continued the methodical drive, even using a Rishon Holmes end around for more yards.  Two plays after Matthews converted a fourth a one, Kent found a jumping Perkins in the back of the end zone for an eight-yard score and 20-11 Towson lead, 3:53 in the second.
  • UNH two just over two minutes to come downfield, completing a touchdown on a 14-yard Kyle Lepkowski completion to pull within three.  Towson countered quickly on the two-minute offense as a Hunter 21-yard rush and Runyon 23-yard catch set up Towson in the red zone.  Next play, Kent hit Runyon for the 15-yard score in the end zone and a 27-17 Towson advantage.  Aided by a special teams penalty, UNH got a last second field goal.  Towson led 27-20 at the half.
  • Into the second half, Kent found Hunter for three-straight passes, two drop-offs and a screen, adding a roughing the passer, to break into UNH territory.  Towson got held up but got a second chance on a running into the kicker penalty, converting a fourth and four on a pass across the middle to Lukkas Londono.  Towson set up for a 32-yard field goal later as Keegan Vaughan converted for a 30-20 Towson lead with 10:10 to go in the third.
  • UNH also scored a touchdown on its first second half drive, going 11 plays and 69 yards to end on a three-yard score by Caleb Burke on a pass from Brosmer.  Towson had a 30-27 lead with 6:09 to go in the third.
  • Towson was forced to a three-and-out and punted back to UNH.  Towson intercepted UNH on third down, but a roughing the passer call kept the ball with the Wildcats.  Two completions of double digit yards and a five-yard rush by Laube for a touchdown gave the lead to UNH 34-30 with 1:22 to go in the third.
  • UNH added another score after a Towson three-and-out into the fourth quarter, using a 15-yard catch, 15-yard penalty and 16-yard run to score a touchdown.  UNH was up 41-30 with 14:04 left.
  • Towson looked to counter as Matthews broke down the sideline for 38 yards and a place just outside the red zone.  Faced with third and 13 from the UNH 24, Kent threw a fade pass and hit Daniel Thompson IV in the end zone for the touchdown.  Matthews ran the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion, pulling Towson to within three at 41-38 with 11:34 to play.
  • As UNH pushed to the Towson 35, Towson held firm with just a two-yard rush and a pair of incompletions.  UNH punted, downing the ball at the Towson 2.  With Towson backed up on a three-and-out, UNH blocked the ball in the end zone and recovered for a touchdown.  UNH led 48-38 with 8:12 to go in the fourth.
  • Towson kept going, as Kent fooled the defense on fourth down for a rush for 35 yards to get on the UNH 12.  Towson was stopped there, including a UNH sack, as Vaughan knocked down the short field goal to bring Towson back within a score at 48-41 with 3:43 left.
  • Tylen Wallace tripped up Laube behind the line to force a third and 11, but UNH converted to keep the drive going.  Again the defensive line gave Towson a chance as Jesus Gibbs stopped the ball carrier for a five-yard loss to set up third and 11.  UNH threw an incomplete pass and punted to the Towson 10.
  • Hunter began Towson's drive with a couple of rushes, including a 17-yard burst down the sideline and another seven yards up the middle.  Kent started rushing and got Towson all the way to the 15.  With 24 seconds left, Londono made the catch for the 14-yard score and a tied game with 20 seconds left.  UNH got a chance for a 47-yard field goal attempt, which was blocked by Antonio Howard.  The teams went into overtime.
  • Towson won the toss and went to play defense first.  Two passes to Burke then a couple of rushes by Laube set up third and goal at the three, where Daniel Raymond broke up the pass in the end zone.  UNH kicked the field goal and led 51-48 in overtime.
  • Two plays into overtime, Kent found Runyon for 16 yards to get to the UNH 3 on first down.  A one-yard rush and an incompletion was followed by Matthews pounding the ball up the middle and diving forward for the touchdown to give Towson the 54-51 walk off victory.
