Fourth Quarter Goal Sees Field Hockey Lose to Sacred Heart

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Towson University Field Hockey team took on the Sacred Heart Pioneers on the road Sunday. In a back and forth game, Sacred Heart came away with a 3-2 victory.

Key Stats:
  • Fiene Valkenburg and Shannon Quaile both scored their second goals of the season, Olivia Handelong recorded her first assist of the season.
  • Tessa Scheenstra had four saves in the loss.
  • For Sacred Heart: Emma Brayford, Holly DeAngelo, and Hannah Fawle scored goals; Brianna Cooper picked up the win with three saves.
 
How it Happened:
  • In the middle of the first quarter, Towson won the first corner of the game, but Sarah Hatfield's shot was saved by Pioneer goalie Brianna Cooper.
  • The ensuing Sacred Heart counterattack led to a shot from Blaire Sparks that was saved by Tessa Scheenstra, but the ball fell to Holly DeAngelo who scored to put the Pioneers up early.
  • Towson won three consecutive penalty corners in the first minute of the second quarter. But two shots from Kristin Strijdom were blocked and saved respectively.
  • With six minutes left in the half, the Pioneers won a penalty corner, Abby Lauer fed Emma Brayford who scored to double Sacred Heart's lead.
  • The Tigers quickly won a penalty corner following the goal, however shots from Anouk Westerink and Fiene Valkenburg both went just wide.
  • Midway through the third quarter, Towson won another corner, Olivia Handelong delivered straight to Shannon Quaile who scored to cut Sacred Heart's lead in half.
  • A few minutes later, Sacred Heart won a pair of corners, and shots from Lauer and Brayford were both saved by Scheenstra.
  • The Tigers responded by winning a corner of their own, Sarah Hatfield's shot found the back of the net, but was disallowed.
  • Less than a minute later, Hatfield ran the ball into the circle, and had it knocked away, but the ball fell to Valkenburg who scored to tie the game.
  • In the first minute of the fourth quarter, the Pioneers won a penalty corner, and Brayford's shot was deflected through by Hannah Fawle to give Sacred Heart the lead.
  • Towson won one more penalty corner a few minutes later, but Quaile's shot was blocked, and the game ended 3-2 in favor of the Pioneers.
 
Next Up:
The Tigers play their third straight road game on Friday, they visit Monmouth at 3:00 p.m. in a Coastal Athletic Association match up.
