Tigers Fall to Stony Brook on Homecoming

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University football team fell to Stony Brook on Homecoming 52-24 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Towson (3-4, 1-2 CAA) took a quick 7-0 lead on a 75-yard touchdown run by Devin Mathews on its first play from scrimmage and led 17-14 in the second quarter, but Stony Brook (5-2, 2-1 CAA) dominated into the second half, outscoring Towson by 38-7 and controlling possession for 21:26.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson had 247 yards on the ground to Stony Brook's 125, the most amount of rushing yards in a game for the Tigers this season.  Stony Brook had the edge in total offensive yards with 512, including 387 on passing, to Towson's 405.
  • Tyrell Greene Jr. led the rushing attack with 115 yards on 16 carries, scoring a touchdown.  Devin Matthews notched a 75-yard rushing touchdown on Towson's first offensive play, finishing with 84 yards on four rushes.
  • Sean Brown was 12-for-20 for 158 yards and an interception.   His top target was John Dunmore, who had three catches for 60 yards.
  • On defense, John Gioia led all players with 11 tackles, including one for loss.  Daniel Raymond broke up two passes, having five tackles.
  • For the Seawolves, Tyler Knoop threw 34-for-40 for 387 yards and a Stony Brook-record six passing touchdowns.  He found Jasiah Williams for nine catches, 92 yards and three touchdowns.  Roland Dempster ran the ball 16 times for 103 yards.  Defensively, Kris Caine tallied up four tackles, a tackle for loss, a fumble recovery and a pass-break-up.
How it Happened
  • Towson got off to a big start as Devin Matthews scored a 75-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage to give Towson a 7-0 lead.  An Ernie Smith sack on the first SBU drive forced a punt for the Seawolves.
  • Towson pushed to the SBU 39 but had to punt on the next drive.  A 52-yard rush by Roland Dempster got the visitors to the Towson 38.  Four consecutive completions brought Stony Brook to the end zone, finished with a 10-yard catch by Jasiah Williams, to tie the game at 7-7 with 6:32 left in the first.
  • Towson went three-and-out, then Stony Brook used a couple of Dempster rushes and a 19-yard reception by Williams to score to make it 14-7 SBU with 3:12 to go in the opening quarter.
  • Sean Brown used short passes to get Towson downfield, including a 19-yard dart to Sam Reynolds to close the first quarter.  A Tyrell Greene Jr. 19-yard carry got Towson to the SBU13, went the drive was stopped.  Keegan Vaughan knocked through a 30-yard field goal for the score to be 14-10 SBU less than a minute into the second.
  • A Stony Brook bad snap on a punt attempt got Towson to the SBU 1 for a drive start.  Greene Jr. punched it into the end zone on the first play to give Towson a 17-14 lead, 11:46 left in the half.
  • Following an exchange of drives, SBU took back the lead on a 55-yard drive, capped by a seven-yard catch by Cal Redman in the end zone to make it 21-17 Seawolves.  Towson got around midfield and punted to pin SBU to its own two-yard line, but the visitors went 98 yards, finished by a Jayce Freeman 21-yard catch in the end zone, to lead 28-17, the eventual halftime score. 
  • Stony Brook dominated into the second half, scoring the first 24 points of the second half towards the final minutes.  The final drive, Towson handed the ball off to Ike Daniels seven times, combining for 75 yards and a touchdown on a 35-yard rush.  Towson fell 52-24.
Inside the Numbers
  • Towson's 247 rushing yards was the most for the team in a game since earning 309 rushing yards at New Hampshire on Sept. 30, 2023.  Towson's previous high in rushing yards in a game this year was as North Dakota State, getting 205 on Sept. 21.
  • Devin Matthews scored his 25th career rushing touchdown, just one behind Dan Ricker's 26 from 1983-87 for sixth all-time in Towson history.  He is 65 rushing yards away from 2,000 in his Towson career.
  • Ike Daniels earned his first career rushing touchdown in college.

  • Towson is on the road the next two weeks, beginning with a game at Monmouth on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
