Hatfield's Late Winner Delivers Win over Knights

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University Field Hockey team hosted the Bellarmine Knights in a non-conference match up on Sunday. A Sarah Hatfield goal with 90 seconds left in the game proved the difference as the Tigers won 2-1.

Key Stats:
  • Hatfield scored her sixth goal of the season; Shannon Quaile scored her third goal of the campaign.
  • Lexi Bove and Lydia Bennett both picked up assists.
  • Tessa Scheenstra picked up the win with four saves.
  • For Bellarmine: Anna Crump scored a goal, Luna Tuncay had an assist, and Kailey Workman had 11 saves in the loss.
 
How it Happened:
  • The Tigers created the first big chance of the game  late in the first quarter, Kristin Strijdom brought the ball into the top of the circle, but her shot was saved by Knight goalie Kailey Workman, and Sarah Hatfield's shot off the rebound went wide.
  • Towson won a corner two minutes into the second quarter, shots by Madisyn Howard and Megan Popp were blocked and saved respectively.
  • The Tigers won four more corners in a four-minute stretch in the middle of the second quarter, Workman saved shots from Strijdom and Anouk Westerink.
  • With a minute left in the first half, Bellarmine won a penalty stroke, Anna Crump put her shot just wide of the left post.
  • Hatfield had the first big chance of the second half as well, her first shot was saved by Workman, her second shot went wide.
  • Towson won another corner two minutes later, Strijdom's shot was saved, and shots from Lexi Bove and Fiene Valkenburg were wide of both posts.
  • Five minutes later the Tigers again won a corner, Bove delivered to Lydia Bennett, who laid the ball off for Shannon Quaile, whose shot beat Workman to give Towson a 1-0 lead.
  • In the middle of the fourth quarter, Bellarmine's Sammie Callaghan received a pass in the circle, her shot was saved by Tessa Scheenstra, Callaghan collected the rebound but was again denied by Scheenstra.
  • With three minutes in the fourth quarter, the Knights won a corner, Luna Tuncay delivered to Crump who scored to tie the game.
  • With 90 seconds remaining in the game, a pass into Bellarmine's circle found Hatfield, her shot was saved by Workman, but this time Hatfield scored her second chance shot to put Towson ahead, the game would end in a 2-1 Tiger victory.

  • Towson plays its final conference game of the season on Friday, the Tigers host Hofstra at noon at the TU Field Hockey Complex.
