TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's soccer team hosted the Monmouth Hawks in a rematch of last year's CAA Championship on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (5-4-8, 3-2-3 CAA) defeated the Hawks (9-2-5, 5-1-2 CAA) 2-0 at Tiger Field.
In the first half, the teams battled back and forth, but neither could find the back of the net.
Malin Bernt Schöps scored her fourth goal of the season to give the Tigers the lead early in the second half.
Courtney Butlion scored her third goal of the year to give the Tigers a 2-0 victory.
Key Stats vs Monmouth:
- The Tigers and Hawks each finished with 16 shots.
- Riley Melendez finished with eight saves while Cassandra Coster had eight saves.
- Nine Tigers registered a shot today.
How It Happened vs Monmouth:
- Danielle Campbell fired a shot from outside the box in the seventh minute, but her shot was saved.
- A couple minutes later, Monmouth had a chance, but Summer Reimet's shot was cleared off the line by Taylor Tolson.
- Sophie Thibeault played a pass through the Monmouth defense that found Kale'a Perry. Perry fired a shot near post that was saved for a corner kick.
- In the 53rd minute, Malin Bernt Schöps scored her fourth goal of the season to give Towson a 1-0 lead. She dribbled around the keeper and fired a shot near post that found the back of the net.
- Three minutes later, Thibeault tried to double Towson's lead, but her shot was saved.
- Monmouth looked for an equalizer in the 59th minute when Reimet got through the Towson's defense, but Riley Melendez made an amazing save to maintain Towson's lead.
- The Hawks continued to apply pressure on the Tigers, but Reimet's shot went off the post in the 68th minute.
- In the 71st minute, Rebecca Groseibl took a shot from atop the box, but her shot was saved by Coster for a corner.
- A minute later Melendez made two more saves to preserve Towson's 1-0 lead.
- In the 77th minute, Thibeault had a shot saved for a corner. On the ensuing corner kick, Emma Levin crossed the ball into Chiara Menegatti who had her shot saved, but the ball fell to Maja Hansson who found Courtney Butlion open. Butlion fired a shot into the back of the net to double Towson's lead.
- Melendez made two late saves to seal a 2-0 victory for the Tiger over Monmouth.
