Thibeault’s Brace Leads Towson Women’s Soccer Over Elon

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's soccer team hosted the Elon Phoenix on Thursday night. The Tigers (3-4-6, 1-2-1 CAA) defeated the Phoenix (8-1-1, 3-1-0 CAA) 2-1 on Thursday night to pick up Towson's first CAA victory of the season.
 
The Tigers scored the match's first goal in the 27th minute when Sophie Thibeault scored her fifth goal of the season. Thibeault scored her second goal of the match in the 60th minute to double Towson's lead. Elon scored in the 73rd minute, but the Tigers held off the Phoenix to pick up a 2-1 victory.

  • The Tigers outshot the Phoenix 17-14.
  • Towson finished with ten shots on goal compared to six for Elon.
  • Riley Melendez finished with five saves while Katie Bisgrove had eight saves.
 
How It Happened vs Elon:
  • The Tigers applied early pressure with Kale'a Perry having two shots, but both were saved by Katie Bisgrove.  
  • In the 24th minute, Riley Melendez made a fantastic one-on-one save to keep the score even.
  • The Tigers found the back of the net in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Courtney Butlion played a pass out wide to Perry who then crossed the ball into the middle. The ball fell to Sophie Thibeault who fired a shot past two defenders for her fifth goal of the year.
  • Melendez made another save in the 54th minute for her third save of the night.
  • In the 60th minute, Thibeault scored her second goal of the match to double Towson's lead. Danielle Campbell played in a header to Thibeault who one-timed the shot into the top corner for her sixth goal of the year.
  • The Tigers looked the extend their lead in the 67th minute, but Thibeault's shot went wide.
  • Elon cut the lead in half in the 73rd minute on Ava Hellner's second goal of the season.
  • In the 83rd minute, Malin Bernt Schöps had her shot saved by Bisgrove, but the rebound fell to Thibeault, who had her shot saved as well.
  • Elon looked for a late equalizer, but Melendez made her fifth save of the match to deny the Phoenix. The Tigers defeated Elon 2-1 to secure their first CAA victory of the season.
 
Inside the Numbers vs Elon:
  • Sophie Thibeault had a career-high five shots on target to lead the Tigers.
  • Towson extends its winning streak against the Phoenix to three.
