Towson Women’s Soccer Defeats Campbell on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's soccer team welcomed the Campbell Camels for Senior Day. The Tigers (4-4-6, 2-2-1CAA) defeated the Camels (4-6-3, 2-3-0 CAA) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon to pick up Towson's second straight CAA victory.
 
In the first half, the Tigers applied pressure on the Camels, registering 12 shots in the half, including a Danielle Campbell shot that went off the crossbar. Courtney Butlion scored her second goal of the season in the 68th minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 win over Campbell.
 
Key Stats vs Campbell:
  • The Tigers outshot the Camels 18-6, including 12-2 in the first half.
  • Towson had the edge in shots on target, 7-2.
  • Riley Melendez finished with two saves while JLo Varada had six saves.
 
How It Happened vs Campbell:
  • The Tigers applied early pressure on the Camels, but Kale'a Perry had her long-distance shot saved.  
  • Towson fired off four more shots in the next nine minutes, but they couldn't find the back of the net.
  • In the 38th minute, Campbell's Kaleigh Backlund fired a shot, but Riley Melendez made the save to keep the match scoreless.
  • Right before halftime, Danielle Campbell fired a shot that went off the crossbar.
  • In the 64th minute, Perry played in a cross to Sophie Thibeault who fired a shot that was saved.
  • Towson found the back of the net in the 68th minute when Perry played in a cross to Courtney Butlion who fired a header that got past Varada for her second goal of the season.
  • Campbell tried to even the score in the 75th minute, but Melendez made her second save to deny the Camels.
  • The Tigers held strong for the remaining 15 minutes and won 1-0 to pick up their second straight CAA victory.
 
Inside the Numbers vs Campbell:
  • Demi Pierre tied the program record for most career appearances with 84 today.
  • Towson finished with 18 shots, the second highest total this season.
  • Riley Melendez reached 300 career saves, the sixth Tiger to do so in program history.
