Field Hockey Takes Down Colgate on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md.- The Towson University Field Hockey team hosted the Colgate Raiders on Senior day. A strong offensive display throughout led to a 4-1 Tiger victory.

How it Happened:
  • Towson won two penalty corners in the first two minutes; however, Sarah Hatfield was denied twice by a pair of saves by Claire van Kempen
  • Towson struck less than four minutes into the game, Madisyn Howard crossed the ball from the right sideline, and Hatfield knocked it into the left boards to put Towson up early.
  • Colgate won a corner early in the second quarter, but Grace Schmelzinger deflected her shot wide; less than two minutes later Morgan Willis had a shot from the top of the circle that found the pads of Tessa Scheenstra.
  • In the final two minutes of the first half, Towson won a penalty stroke, and Olivia Handelong converted to double the Tiger's lead.
  • Towson struck quickly in the second half as well, Kristin Strijdom took the ball from a group of players in the circle and shot it into the left boards to push Towson's lead to three.
  • Then it was Colgate's turn to win and convert a penalty stroke, Charlotte Hamilton made it 3-1.
  • Towson quickly won a corner soon after, but Abby Williams made a great defensive save to deny Anouk Westerink.
  • Towson would respond eight minutes later, Hatfield crossed the ball from right of the circle and Westerink received, turned, and fired a shot into the left boards to restore the Tiger's three goal lead.
  • Towson won a corner less than a minute into the fourth quarter as well, but Mackie Mann saved Hatfield's shot.
  • Towson won another corner in the final minute of the fourth quarter as well, and again Hatfield was denied by Mann, the game ended 4-1.

  • The Black & Gold are on the road next weekend, beginning with a trip to Play Northeastern in CAA play Friday at 3:00 p.m.
