SPARTANBURG, S.C. – An offensive surge at the plate powered the Towson baseball team to a 14-3 victory over the Bucknell Bison Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
Towson (1-1, 0-0 CAA) got the scoring started in the first, plating four runs on two RBI hits. The Tigers extended their lead to 10 in the third on three hits, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of
Bryce Frederick. Three straight hits in the fourth gave the Bison their first runs, making it a 10-2 game. Towson then pushed the lead to 12 on Frederick's lead-off home run in the sixth followed by
Sean Britt's three-run shot later in the inning. The Bison plated one more run in the ninth, but were thwarted by
Fritz Meyer finishing the game with a pair of strikeouts.
Key Stats:
- Towson outhit Bucknell 11 to eight on the afternoon, with five Tigers picking up multi-hit games. Jeremy Wagner, Elijah Dickerson and Jordan Peyton each picked up their second in as many games.
- Jordan Luton (1-0) got the win in relief for the Black & Gold, allowing two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Other Towson relievers combined to allow one run on no hits.
- Bucknell starter Hadley Maxwell took the loss (0-1), allowing eight runs (four earned) on four hits and six walks with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
How it Happened:
- The Tigers jumped out to a lead in the top of the first by way of a bases-loaded two-run single to right field from Taye Robinson. Jordan Peyton knocked in two more with a double down the right-field line on the next at-bat to make it a 4-0 game.
- In the third, three walks loaded the bases to set up Jeremy Wagner's two-RBI single up the middle. Elijah Dickerson hit an RBI single through the right side on the following at-bat before Bryce Frederick hit a three-run home run to center field to make it a 10-0 Towson advantage.
- Nate Nabholz allowed two runs on three hits in the fourth capped by a two-run single up the middle by Bucknell's Nic Adamo, cutting the lead to eight.
- Frederick led off the sixth with a solo home run, his second of the game. With two runners on, Sean Britt homered to right center field, extending the Towson lead to 14-2.
- In the bottom of the ninth, the Bison plated one more run on a fielder's choice ground out, but two strikeouts from Fritz Meyer secured the victory for the Tigers.
Inside the Numbers:
- Jordan Peyton finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. After yesterday's game, it's his first career two-game stretch with multi-hit and multi-RBI games.
- Frederick picked up his third collegiate multi-home run game (4/4/23 vs. UMBC, 5/7/23 vs. William & Mary). It's the seventh four-plus RBI game of his career (six in 2023).
- Jeremy Wagner and Elijah Dickerson each had their second multi-hit game in as many days to start the season.
