Towson Baseball Drops Pair of Games to Bucknell, Wofford on Sunday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Towson University baseball team closed the opening weekend of play with two games on Sunday, one each against Bucknell and Wofford at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
 
Against Bucknell (1-2), both teams remained quiet early until the Bison took the lead in the fifth inning, ultimately winning 7-3 in the ninth with the tying run at the plate for the Tigers (1-2).
 
In the second game against the Terriers (3-0), Towson (1-3) fell 14-1 to close out the weekend.
 
Key Stats vs. Bucknell:
  • Max Simpson (0-1) took the loss for Towson, allowing one earned run on four hits in 5.0 innings pitched with two strikeouts and two walks.
  • Jake O'Malley (1-0) got the win in relief for Bucknell, with no runs allowed on one hit with five strikeouts and a walk. Nick Mulvey picked up the save (1) with one earned run allowed in 2.2 innings of work.
  • Towson left 13 runners on base compared to Bucknell's 10.
 
How it Happened vs. Bucknell:
  • Both teams remained quiet on offense through the first four innings until Jacob Corson of Bucknell's triple in the fifth set him up to score on a sacrifice fly, making it 1-0 Bison.
  • The Bison got two more across in the sixth on Nic Adamo's single to right center with runners on second and third.
  • With a runner on third in the seventh, Casey Bishop picked up his first RBI of the season with a single up the middle. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Bryce Frederick plated another run with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to one.
  • The Bison pushed the lead back to two in the eighth inning on Corson's RBI single.
  • The Bison extended the score to 7-2 in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly, walk and wild pitch.
  • The Tigers challenged in the last half inning, scoring one run on a fielder's choice groundout with the bases loaded. A single and walk brought the tying run to the plate, but the Tigers couldn't extend the game as Jordan Peyton struck out.
 
Key Stats vs. Wofford:
  • Brett Seils (0-1) took the loss for the Tigers, surrendering nine runs (8 earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts.
  • Camden Wicker (1-0) got the win in relief for the Terriers, tossing two scoreless innings with one hit surrendered.
 
How it Happened vs. Wofford:
  • With runners on second and third in the second inning, David Wiley hit a single through the left side to give Wofford a 2-0 lead.
  • Brett Seils was knocked out of the game in the third, after allowing six runs on six hits in the top of the inning. Avery Heiple came in in relief, and surrendered another three runs, one of which Seils was responsible for.
  • Elijah Dickerson and Bryce Frederick started the fourth inning with back-to-back singles, before Jordan Peyton knocked home Dickerson two batters later.
  • With runners on the corners in the fifth, a wild pitch plated one for Wofford, making it 12-1.
  • A fielder's choice ground out to short in the sixth with runners on second and third extended the lead by one for Wofford.
  • The Terriers pushed the score to 14-1 in the seventh, with a wild pitch with runners on the corners allowing a run to score.
  • Neither the Tigers nor Terriers scored for in the last two innings for a 14-1 final score.
 
On Deck:
Next weekend, the Tigers head to Boca Raton, Fla. to face Florida Atlantic in a three-game series Feb. 23-25.
