GREENVILLE, S.C. – Towson softball split the final day of the Furman Invitational on Sunday with an 8-6 win against IUPUI and a 5-4 loss against local foe Georgetown on Sunday afternoon.
Cori Jones gave the Tigers a walk off win against IUPUI with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Towson (3-6) had double digit hits in both games. The Tigers had seven runs scored in the previous three games, but exploded for eight against the Jaguars and four against the Hoyas on Sunday.
GAME ONE: TOWSON 8, IUPUI 6
Key Stats:
- Mackenzie Lake led the Tigers going 3-3 from the plate. Isabella Canesi added two hits and a team best three RBIs including a two-run home run.
- Cori Jones also went yard with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Tigers the win. In total eight different Tigers recorded a hit.
How It Happened:
- Towson would threaten in the first inning getting runners on base, but the Tigers would strand the runners.
- Just two innings later Towson would strike. Kristin Toland would lead off the third with a single and advance on a wild pitch. After Elizabeth Yoskowitz drew a walk, Mackenzie Lake would lay down a bunt to advance both runners.
- A few pitches later Toland would score on a wild pitch to put the Tigers in front 1-0.
- The Tigers would strike again in the fourth. Ally Hickman would lead off with a single and advance on an error. Just one pitch later, Isabella Canesi would drive her in with a double to make it 2-0.
- Kristin Toland would add to the lead with a sacrifice fly to plate Canesi and give Towson a 3-0 lead into the fifth.
- Cara Bohner would add to the lead with an RBI double that scored Lake who led off with a base hit. Canesi would add to the lead with a two-out, two-run home run to make it a 6-0 lead.
- However, IUPUI would put up six runs in the seventh to tie it at 6-6.
- Cori Jones would provide the heroics for the Tigers with a walk-off two-run home run to give Towson an 8-6 win.
GAME TWO: TOWSON 4, GEORGETOWN 5
Key Stats:
- Three Tigers had multiple hits with Elizabeth Yoskowitz, Jones and Toland each collecting two hits.
- Toland, Jones and Mackenzie Lake each drove in a run for the Tigers.
How It Happened:
- The Hoyas wasted little time jumping out to a 3-0 lead after capitalizing on a pair of Towson errors. The Tigers would respond with a run in the bottom of the inning. Cori Jones singled home Mackenzie Lake who reached on an error to make it 3-1.
- However, the Hoyas had another response with a run in the second to take a 4-1 lead.
- Towson would have an answer in the fourth. Kristin Toland doubled home Macie Jacquet who pinch ran for Addie Ferguson who reached on a walk. Alyssa Myint would score just two batters later with a Lake sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-3 after four.
- After the Hoyas added a run in the sixth, Towson trailed by two entering the seventh. Cara Bohner led off the inning with a double and scored on a Cori Jone RBI single. Jones would work to third but the Tigers could not complete the comeback in a 5-4 loss.
On Deck:
- Towson will head to North Carolina to take part in the East Carolina Pirate Invitational next Friday-Sunday, Feb. 23-25. The Tigers will face the host Pirates, Rider and North Carolina Central over the three days.
