Tigers Split Doubleheader, Win Series vs. Yale

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team faced Yale in a doubleheader on Sunday, splitting the games with a 3-1 win in the first and 1-0 loss in the second at John B. Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md.
 
Towson (3-10) opened the scoring in the fifth inning on Elijah Dickerson's RBI double. The Tigers added another run in the sixth inning on a fielding error. Yale (0-8) cut the deficit to one in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly. Towson added another insurance run in the bottom of the frame, scoring a run on Cole Stefano's single through the left side. Matt Lynch worked out of trouble in the ninth inning to pick up the save in the Tigers' 3-1 win.
 
Key Stats (Game One):
  • Towson starter Nate Nabholz (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, allowing no runs on five hits. He matched his career-high with eight strikeouts on the afternoon. Matt Lynch recorded the save with one hit surrendered in 1.0 inning of work.
  • Yale starter Colton Shaw (0-3) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
  • Towson pitchers held Yale to one run for the second game in a row to pick up the series win.
 
How it Happened (Game One):
  • Yale had a chance to take the first lead of game one in the fourth inning, but Elijah Dickerson threw out the runner at the plate to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
  • Towson took the lead in the fifth inning. Cole Stefano led off with a single up the middle and stole second, setting up Elijah Dickerson's RBI double to left field for the first run of the game.
  • The Tigers added another run in the sixth inning, with Williamson scoring on a fielding error by the Yale shortstop.
  • Yale cut the deficit to one in the eighth inning. After a walk, hit batter and balk set up runners on second and third, Chaplin's sacrifice fly to right field plated Sloan.
  • Towson got another insurance run in the eighth inning. With a runner on third, Stefano's single through the left side gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
  • After a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth, Matt Lynch relieved Brandon Jung on the mound. After forcing a groundout, the Bulldogs loaded the bases. Lynch struck out Sloan and forced a groundout back to him from Larsen for a 3-1 Tiger win.
 
Key Stats (Game Two):
  • Towson reliever Ryder Jeske (0-1) took the loss, allowing one earned run on one hit in 0.1 innings.
  • Yale starter Reid Easterly (1-2) registered the win while not allowing a run on five hits in 7.2 innings pitched. Yale reliever Tate Evans (1) picked up a save in the 1.1 inning outing.
  • Yale outhit Towson 6-5 in game two. The Tigers left six runners on base compared to Yale's seven.
 
How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Yale challenged in the second inning with the bases loaded, but Brett Seils stranded the runners on base to keep the score even.
  • Seils turned in a solid outing in the start, allowing no runs on three hits in 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts, matching his career high.
  • The Bulldogs scored first in the seventh inning. After a walk and single put runners on the corners, Chaplin's single to second base plated a run for the 1-0 Yale advantage.
  • The Tigers chance to strikeout came in the eighth inning with two runners on and one out, but it was thwarted by Yale reliever Tate Evans to get out of the frame.
  • The Tigers were unable to convert a run in the bottom of the ninth for a 1-0 final in favor of the Bulldogs.

Towson returns to John B. Schuerholz Park on Tuesday, March 12, to face the UMBC Retrievers. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
