TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (4-14) hosted Niagara (12-7) in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon, dropping a back-and-forth contest to the Niagara Purple Eagles 13-9 at John B. Schuerholz Park.
Niagara held a two-run lead through the first frame and a half. Towson took the lead in the bottom of the second, highlighted by
Taye Robinson's RBI double down the left field line early in the frame. Two RBI singles and a passed ball gave the Purple Eagles a one-run advantage in the third. A wild pitch in the fourth added another run for Niagara. In the fifth, an RBI triple from Rataczak made it a 7-4 game. The Tigers tied the game in the home half on consecutive RBI singles from
Jeremy Wagner, Robinson and
Ryan Williamson. Towson retook the lead, 9-7, in the sixth on
Elijah Dickerson's RBI triple and a double steal with runners on the corners. Desjardins' second home run and an inside the park home run from Rataczak gave the Purple Eagles a one run advantage in the seventh. Niagara scored three more runs in the eighth, providing some insurance. Zach Cameron held the Tigers scoreless on one hit in the final two frames for a 13-9 final at Schuerholz Park.
Key Stats:
- Towson reliever Nick Karls (0-1) took the loss in his 2.0 inning relief stint, allowing five earned runs on four hits with one walk issued. Karls struck out two batters.
- Niagara reliever Zach Cameron (3-1) registered the win in his 3.1 inning scoreless appearance with two hits allowed. Cameron fanned two batters.
How it Happened:
- Brady Desjardins homered to right field in the top of the first, giving Niagara an early lead.
- The Purple Eagles plated another run in the second inning to extend the lead.
- Towson took the lead in the home half, starting with Taye Robinson's two-run double down the left field line to tie the game. Robinson scored two batters later on a passed ball. Later in the frame, Jordan Peyton's sacrifice fly to right field made it a 4-2 Tiger advantage.
- Niagara retook the lead in the third inning on two RBI singles and a passed ball to make it a 5-4 game.
- In the fourth inning, a wild pitch with runners on the corners extended the Purple Eagle lead to two runs.
- Rataczak's triple to right center in the fifth with a runner on first made it a 7-4 game.
- The Tigers tied the game in the home half with consecutive singles from Jeremy Wagner, Robinson and Ryan Williamson with runners on first and second scoring one run each.
- Towson retook the lead in the sixth inning on Elijah Dickerson's RBI double to right center with a runner on first base. Later in the frame, a double steal forced an errant throw from the catcher, allowing Dickerson to score.
- Desjardins' second homer of the game to right with a runner on in the seventh tied the game at nine apiece. Rataczak's inside the park home run on the following at-bat gave Niagara a one run advantage.
- Two singles and a sacrifice fly in the eighth pushed the Niagara lead to 13-9.
- Niagara reliever Cameron allowed just one hit in the final two frames for a 13-9 final in favor of Niagara.
