Tigers Escape Ninth Inning Scare, End Skid vs. GW

ARLINGTON, Va. – Towson University baseball (5-19, 0-3 CAA) faced George Washington (15-10) Wednesday afternoon, escaping a four-run ninth inning rally by the Revolutionaries for the 8-7 victory at Tucker Field in Arlington, Va.
 
Towson jumped out to a lead in the second inning, starting with Brian Heckelman's two-run double to left field. Bryce Frederick singled through the left side later in the frame for a Tiger run. GW's Rogan hit a lead-off home run to put the Revs on the board. In the third, Peyton knocked in one with a single and Taye Robinson hit a two-run double down the left field line later in the inning, making it a 6-1 Towson advantage. GW added another run in the bottom half on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to four. After four scoreless innings, the Tigers added two runs on three hits in the eighth. A bases-loaded walk in the home half give GW their third run. The Revs challenged in the ninth inning with four runs on three hits before Justin Rebok came in to secure the final out and pick up his third save of the year.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson reliever Ryder Jeske (1-1) recorded the win, allowing one hit and three free passes in the 2.2 inning scoreless appearance. Justin Rebok picked up his third save of the year, striking out his only batter faced to end the game.
  • GW starter Tyler Blankenship (1-2) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits in the 2.0 inning outing.
  • The Revs left 16 runners on base compared to Towson's 10, including three innings of leaving the bases loaded.
 
How it Happened:
  • The Tigers got on the board first, scoring three runs in the top half of the second. Brian Heckelman's two-run double to left field sent home Brady Nathison and Jordan Peyton. Bryce Frederick's single through the left side later in the frame scored Taye Robinson from second.
  • GW's Rogan led off the home half with a home run to put the Revs on the board.
  • With runners on second and third in the third, Jordan Peyton singled through the left side, sending home another run for the Tigers. Later in the frame, Taye Robinson hit a double down the left field line, sending two more Tigers home.
  • In the bottom half with the bases loaded, Rogan reached on a fielder's choice and sent a run home to make it a 6-2 game.
  • Both teams remained scoreless through the next four frames.
  • The Tigers added two more runs in the eighth inning. After Cole Stefano's bunt single, Elijah Dickerson hit a double to left center, scoring Stefano. Josh Janove followed with a single to left center, scoring Dickerson for an 8-2 Towson advantage.
  • In the bottom half, three singles loaded the bases before a walk added a run for the Revs.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, a pair of singles and pair of walks brought in a run for the Revs. Sam Gates followed with a double down the right-field line to plate two more. After getting the second out of the frame, an intentional walk and base on balls to follow pulled GW within one. Rebok entered the game with one out to go and fanned the final batter with the bases loaded for an 8-7 Tiger win.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Elijah Dickerson picked up his 13th multi-hit game of the season, nine more than the next closest Tiger.
  • Brian Heckelman and Taye Robinson each picked up multiple RBIs, Heckelman's fourth time of the season and Robinson's third.
  • Cole Stefano extended his hitting streak to five games and has reached base safely in 12 consecutive games.

Towson returns to Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play this weekend vs. Hofstra in a three-game set at John B. Schuerholz Park Friday through Sunday.
