Baseball Completes Comeback vs. Hofstra to Secure the Series Victory

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (7-20, 2-4 CAA) faced Hofstra (10-17, 2-4 CAA) Sunday afternoon in the series rubber and came back from a four-run deficit for a 10-8 victory at John B. Schuerholz Park.
 
Through the first four and a half frames it was all Hofstra as the Pride led 5-1. The Tigers added two runs in the bottom half to cut the Tiger deficit to two. Hofstra pushed the lead to 6-3 in the sixth with an RBI triple to center field. The Tigers tied it up in the home half on Brian Heckelman's two-run double and Bryce Frederick's single to center later in the frame. Towson took a two-run lead in the seventh inning on a pair of RBI hits from Jordan Peyton and Taye Robinson. Dylan Palmer pulled the Pride within one in the eighth on a double to left field. Peyton added two more runs for the Tigers in the bottom half for a 10-7 advantage. Hofstra's Lane hit an RBI double to left center in the ninth to make it a two-run game, but Jordan Luton retired the final two batters for a 10-8 Towson victory, securing the CAA series victory.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson reliever Jake Michel (1-0) recorded the win in his 2.1 frame outing, allowing one earned run on two hits with two walks issued. Michel struck out two batters. Jordan Luton picked up his first save of the season with one earned run allowed on one hit in his 1.0 inning outing.
  • Hofstra reliever Penn Sealey (0-2) took the loss with two earned runs allowed on four hits in his 1.0 inning appearance.
  • Towson outhit the Pride, 13-8 in the game with three Tigers picking up multi-hit games.
 
How it Happened:
  • Bryce Frederick opened the scoring in the third inning with a solo home run over the left-center field fence.
  • Hofstra took a lead in the next frame on Kennedy's two-run double to left-center field.
  • The Pride added three more runs in the fifth on a single, double and bases-loaded walk for a 4-1 advantage.
  • Towson got two back in the home half on an RBI fielder's choice and sacrifice fly.
  • Rosso of the Pride hit a triple to center field in the sixth, scoring Palmer from first.
  • The Tigers added three runs on five hits in the home half, highlighted by Brian Heckelman's two-run double to left field and Frederick's one-run single to center.
  • Towson took its first lead of the game in the seventh inning, starting with back-to-back doubles by Josh Janove and Jordan Peyton for a run. Taye Robinson's single through the left side two batters later scored the eighth run of the game for the Black & Gold.
  • Palmer doubled to left field with a runner on second in the next frame to pull the Pride within one.
  • With runners on second and third in the bottom half, Peyton singled to left center to make it a 10-7 Towson advantage.
  • In the ninth, Hofstra's Lane doubled to left center with a runner on first to make it 10-8. Jordan Luton retired the final two batters for a 10-8 Towson victory, securing the first CAA series win of the season.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Frederick, Heckelman and Peyton each picked up multiple RBIs in the game. Frederick now leads the team with six such games with Heckelman (5) and Peyton (4) right behind the team leader.
  • Frederick now stands tied for seventh in the conference with seven home runs this season.
  • Michel picked up his first victory in a Towson uniform in his 2.0 inning outing.

The Tigers are back at John B. Schuerholz Park next weekend vs. the Northeastern Huskies in a three-game set Friday through Sunday.
