Simpson Records Career-High Eight Strikeouts in Home Opener Win vs. Yale

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team hosted the Yale Bulldogs in its home opener Friday afternoon, taking a 2-1 victory at John B. Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md.
 
Towson (2-10) got out a lead in the first inning, scoring one run on back-to-back doubles and another three batters later on Taye Robinson's single to right field. Max Simpson held the Bulldogs scoreless in his 7.0 inning start, allowing just two hits. Yale (0-7) got one run in the eighth inning on back-to-back doubles down the left field line, but Justin Rebok forced the last out of the inning to send it to the ninth frame. In the ninth, Yale hit three fly-balls to center field, all caught by Cole Stefano for a 2-1 home opener win at John B. Schuerholz Park.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson starter Max Simpson (1-2) earned his first win of the season, allowing no runs on just two hits in a career-high 7.0 innings of work. Simpson added a career-high eight strikeouts in the start. Justin Rebok picked up the save in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
  • Yale starter Daniel Cohen (0-2) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
  • The Tigers outhit the Bulldogs 10-4 on the afternoon, with three Tigers picking up two-hit games.
 
How it Happened:
  • Towson took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back doubles from Elijah Dickerson and Bryce Frederick scored the first run of the game. Three batters later, Taye Robinson's single to right field gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
  • Starting pitcher Max Simpson went a career-high seven innings, allowing just two hits on 25 batters faced. He fanned a career-high eight batters in the start.
  • The Bulldogs challenged in the eighth inning, with back-to-back doubles from Chaplin and Hanson cutting the Towson lead to one. Rebok forced a groundout on the following at-bat to get out of the frame with the lead intact.
  • Yale swatted three fly-balls to center field in the ninth, but all were caught by Cole Stefano for a 2-1 home opener win at John B. Schuerholz Park.

The Tigers and Bulldogs will play games two and three of the series on Sunday. Game one is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Game two will follow the conclusion of game one.
