TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (8-24, 3-7 CAA) faced UNCW (21-13, 8-2 CAA) Friday evening, falling 8-1 to the Seahawks at Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.
UNCW added one run each in the first and third innings, and three in the fourth to get out to a 5-0 lead.
Brian Heckelman's RBI single to left field in the sixth inning put the Tigers on the board, 1-0. The Seahawks added one run in the bottom half of the inning and another two in the eighth. The Tigers put three runners on base in the ninth but couldn't convert any to runs for an 8-1 final.
Key Stats:
- Towson starter Andrew Luczak (0-4) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits and five walks issued in the 4.0 inning start. Luczak struck out three batters.
- UNCW starter RJ Sales (6-2) registered the win in the 6.0 inning start, allowing one earned run on six hits and three walks, striking out four.
How it Happened:
- In the bottom of the first inning, four walks plated the first run for the Seahawks.
- Tanner Thach hit a solo home run to left field to extend the Seahawk lead to 2-0 in the third inning.
- With a runner on first in the bottom of the fourth, UNCW's Croom hit a single, advancing the runner to third base. DeMartino's single on the following at-bat drove in the run from third. Tanner Thach hit a double to left center to follow, making it a 5-0 game.
- In the top of the sixth, Taye Robinson singled and made his way to third base on a stolen base and ground-out. Brian Heckelman singled to left field on the following at-bat to put the Tigers on the board.
- DeMartino's double down the left field line in the bottom half extended the Seahawk lead to 6-1.
- Croom led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to center field to add a UNCW run. With runners on second and third later in the inning, a ground-out plated another to make it 8-1.
- With two outs in the top of the ninth, three straight singles loaded the bases for the Tigers. Jordan Peyton's ground-out to short made it an 8-1 final in favor of the Seahawks.
