Towson Baseball Falls to UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team (8-25, 3-8 CAA) faced UNCW (22-13, 9-2 CAA) Saturday afternoon, falling 14-2 to the Seahawks at Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.
 
Taye Robinson put the Tigers on the board in the first inning with an RBI single to right field. In the home half, UNCW took a commanding 5-1 lead. The Seahawks added three more runs in the second, making it 8-1. Bryce Frederick's single to center field in the fifth cut the UNCW lead to six runs. The Seahawks added two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 12-2 lead. UNCW added another two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, sending the game to a 14-2 final.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson starter Jake Michel (2-1) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits in 1.0 inning of work.
  • UNCW starter Jacob Shafer (3-4) registered the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits in the 6.0 inning start.
 
How it Happened:
  • In the top of the first, Cole Stefano reached on a fielding error. Later in the frame, Taye Robinson singled to right field, scoring Stefano from third base.
  • In the home half, Tanner Thach hit a home run with a runner on to give UNCW a 2-1 lead. Later in the frame with a runner on second, Marsh's double down the left field line extended the lead to two runs. Arendt's home run on the following at-bat made it a 5-1 game.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, a wild pitch scored a run for UNCW. Arendt's single up the middle on the following at-bat plated two runs, making it 8-1.
  • In the top of the fifth, Bryce Frederick singled to center field with runners on to cut the Seahawk lead to six runs.
  • After a pair of singles put runners on the corners in the home half, the runner from third scored on a wild pitch to make it a 9-2 game. With a runner on third later in the frame, Croom's single to right center extended the lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, an RBI single to left off the bat of Jones pushed the Seahawk lead to 11-2. Croom singled to left on the following at-bat to make it 12-2.
  • Croom hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning, extending the Seahawk lead to 12 runs.

The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Brooks Field.
