WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team (8-26, 3-9 CAA) faced UNCW (23-13, 10-2 CAA) Sunday afternoon, falling 15-3 to the Seahawks at Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.
UNCW used big innings at the plate in the first, fifth, sixth and seventh to get out to a 15-0 lead. The Tigers clawed back with three runs in the eighth inning to get on the board. After a scoreless bottom of the eighth and top of the ninth, the game went to a 15-3 final.
Key Stats:
- Towson starter Max Simpson (2-4) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks issued in the 4.0 inning start.
- UNCW's Zane Taylor (4-0) recorded the win, scattering four hits in the 7.0 inning scoreless start.
How it Happened:
- With a runner on second in the bottom of the first, Tanner Thach homered to right field to give UNCW the lead.
- The next three innings remained scoreless, with each team picking up three hits.
- In the fifth, Marsh's single through the left side with a runner on second extended the Seahawk lead. Wills grounded out to second later in the frame to make it 4-0.
- In the bottom of the sixth, a pair of singles put runners on base, setting up Evans' two-run double to right-center field. Evans scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Arendt's double added two more runs on the following at-bat, making it 9-0.
- The Seahawks added six runs on three two-run hits in the seventh, extending the lead to 15 runs.
- With two runners on base in the top of the eighth, Elijah Dickerson doubled to left center to give the Tigers two runs. Later in the frame, Frederick hit an RBI single to right center, scoring Dickerson.
- The Tigers put two runners on in the ninth but didn't convert any runs for a 15-3 final at Brooks Field.
