Nathison, Akers Provide Go-Ahead Runs Late to Lift Towson over the Mount

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (9-26, 3-9 CAA) returned home on Tuesday afternoon to face Mount St. Mary's (6-26-1, 3-6 MAAC), defeating the Mountaineers 8-5 at John B. Schuerholz Park.
 
After a run in the first from the Mount, the Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half. The Mountaineers added one run each in the second and third innings to take a 3-2 lead. Elijah Dickerson's two-run single and Josh Janove's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead. In the next frame, a sacrifice fly pulled the Mountaineers within one. Seeker's double to right center in the top of the seventh tied the game at five. Nathison singled through the left side with a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth, giving Towson a one-run lead. Chris Akers followed with a home run to left for a three-run lead. Luis Rivera took the mound in the ninth, and recorded his first save of the season in his scoreless frame, giving the Tigers an 8-5 victory.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson reliever Justin Rebok (2-3) recorded the win in 1.0 scoreless inning with one walk issued, adding one strikeout. Luis Rivera registered his first save of the season, striking out one in his 1.0 frame appearance.
  • Mount St. Mary's relief pitcher Jackson Snyder (0-3) took the loss with one earned run allowed on one walk with no outs recorded.
 
How it Happened:
  • A pair of hits put runners on the corners for the Mount in the top of the first inning, setting up Seeker's sacrifice fly to center field.
  • With runners on first and second in the bottom half, Josh Janove drove in a run with a single to left field. A fielding error allowed a second run to score, giving the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.
  • In the top of the second with runners on the corners, the Mount's Wockley tied the game on a sacrifice fly to center.
  • Long stole home after a throw down to second base on a wild pitch with runners on the corners in the top of the third, giving the Mount a 3-2 lead.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Elijah Dickerson drove in two runs on his single to right field. Josh Janove followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 5-3 edge.
  • Seeker hit another sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to pull the Mountaineers within one.
  • In the top of the seventh, Seeker hit an RBI double to right center, scoring the runner from first to tie the game.
  • With a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth, Brady Nathison singled through the left side to drive in the run. Chris Akers followed with a home run over the left field fence, his first of the season, to provide the Tigers some insurance.
  • Luis Rivera came in for Towson in the ninth inning and retired three of four batters faced to secure the 8-5 victory for the Tigers.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Elijah Dickerson picked up his 19th multi-hit and fifth multi-RBI game with his 2-for-3 performance at the plate, adding two RBIs, a run scored and a walk. Dickerson extended his hitting streak to five games.
  • Josh Janove batted 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, walk and two RBIs, picking up his second multiple RBI game of the season.
  • Chris Akers picked up his first multiple RBI game of the season, going 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, adding another run scored.

The Tigers are back at John B. Schuerholz Park tomorrow to face Coppin State at 3 p.m.
