Towson Baseball Falters After Early Lead, Loses to Stony Brook in Extras

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Towson University baseball team (10-28, 3-11 CAA) continued their Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series vs. Stony Brook (19-17, 8-6 CAA), falling 8-7 in 10 innings to the Seawolves Saturday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field in New York.
 
The Tigers got out to a three-run lead in the first inning, courtesy of Taye Robinson's two-run double and Josh Janove's single to follow. Brady Nathison's ground-out to third base with two runners in scoring position in the second extended the Towson lead to 4-0. The Tigers added another run in the third on a ground-out. Stony Brook got three runs on three hits in the bottom half to pull within two runs. Jordan Peyton's solo home run to left field in the fourth pushed the lead to 7-3. The Seawolves added another three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within one run. A single to right field with runners on in the bottom of the ninth plated one run to tie the game at seven, sending it to extra inning. The Seawolves scored the final run on a balk in the tenth inning, advancing a runner to the plate for an 8-7 final.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson reliever Kyle Emmons (0-1) recorded the loss, allowing one earned run on one hit and one walk in 0.2 innings pitched. Emmons added one strikeout and a balk to end the game.
  • Colin Rhein (1-0) registered the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks. Rhein added six strikeouts.
 
How it Happened:
  • With runners on first and second in the top of the first inning, Taye Robinson doubled to center field to make it 2-0. Josh Janove followed with a single to left field to extend the Tiger lead to three runs.
  • With two runners in scoring position in the second, Brady Nathison grounded out to third base, scoring Cole Stefano from third to make it a four-run lead.
  • After back-to-back hits by Elijah Dickerson and Bryce Frederick to lead off the third, Janove grounded out to the pitcher to extend the lead to five runs.
  • Stony Brook responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom half. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, setting up Evan Fox's sacrifice fly. Miceli followed with an infield single to short to score Carson, making it a 5-2 game. A ground-out on the following at-bat pulled the Seawolves within two runs.
  • Jordan Peyton hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning to make it a 6-3 game.
  • In the top of the sixth with runners on the corners, Brady Nathison grounded into a double play which scored Stefano from third to add to the Towson lead.
  • Stony Brook added three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within one run. After three hit batters, Brown-Eiring's sacrifice fly to center field made it 7-4. A throwing error and ground-out to follow scored one run each, making it 7-6 in favor of the Tigers after seven innings.
  • Justin Rebok retired the final two batters of the eighth inning and returned to the mound for the ninth. After retiring the first batter, Erik Paulsen doubled to right field. Following a walk, Brett Paulsen singled to right field to score a run and tie the game at seven. Justin Rebok followed with a strikeout, walk and ground-out to strand three runners and send the game to extra innings.
  • With runners on second and third in the bottom of the tenth, a balk by Towson pitcher Kyle Emmons advanced the runners, giving Stony Brook the 8-7 victory.
