TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (10-34, 3-15 CAA) faced Maryland (29-17, 9-7 CAA) in a mid-week contest at John B. Schuerholz Park, falling 13-8 to the Terrapins Tuesday afternoon.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning off solo home runs from Maryland's Hojnar and Towson's
Jordan Peyton. A groundout in the top of the second gave Maryland a 2-1 edge. The Tigers scored six runs on six hits in the home half, highlighted by
Devan Barnett's two-run triple and Peyton's second home run of the game. The Terrapins tied the game in the top of the third with five runs on five hits in the frame, with Hojnar picking up his second home run of the day. An RBI groundout with a runner on third in the fifth gave Maryland an 8-7 lead.
Chris Akers tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to left field. Maryland scored five runs on three hits in the top of the eighth to retake the lead. The Tigers had three base runners in the final two frames but came up short for a 13-8 final in favor of Maryland.
Key Stats:
- Towson reliever Brandon Jung (1-2) took the loss with two earned runs allowed on two walks issued in 0.1 innings pitched.
- Maryland reliever Andrew Johnson (1-0) recorded the win, allowing one earned run on two hits and three walks issued in 4.0 innings of work. Johnson struck out three.
How it Happened:
- Sam Hojnar started the scoring in the top of the first with a solo home run to right field.
- Jordan Peyton tied the game in the bottom frame with a solo home run of his own to left field.
- With runners on second and third in the top of the second, Lambros' groundout scored a run to give Maryland a 2-1 edge.
- After back-to-back singles from Cole Stefano and Chris Akers to start the home half, Devan Barnett's stand-up triple to right-center field cleared the bases to give Towson a 3-2 advantage. Jeremy Wagner singled to left on the following at-bat to score Barnett. After a sacrifice bunt, two wild pitches scored Wagner. Peyton followed with a home run to left field, his second of the game, to make it a 7-2 game in favor of the Tigers.
- Chris Hacopian and Hojnar started the top of the third with back-to-back home runs, making it a 7-4 game. A walk and double put runners on second and third, setting up Iannazzo's sacrifice fly. Russell followed with a two-run homer to left field to tie the game at seven apiece.
- Iannazzo's triple in the top of the fifth set up Russell's RBI groundout to second base, making it an 8-7 game.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Akers hit a solo home run to left field to tie the game again.
- With runners on first and second in the top of the eighth, Hojnar's single to left field plated one. Orr's single two batters later scored a tenth Terrapin run. Later in the frame, a bases-loaded balk extended the Maryland lead. Iannazzo followed with a double, plating two, for a 13-8 score.
- The Tigers had three base runners in the final two frames but couldn't convert any runs for a 13-8 final at John B. Schuerholz Park.
