Tigers Hold on After Big Early Lead vs. William & Mary, Ending CAA Skid

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Towson University baseball team continued Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play vs. William & Mary Saturday afternoon in the second game of the series at Plumeri Park. The Tigers (14-37, 4-18 CAA) topped the Tribe (28-22, 11-12 CAA) 9-7 after getting out to a big 7-0 lead through two and a half frames in Williamsburg, Va.
 
The Tigers scored seven runs on seven hits in the second and third innings to jump out to an early lead in the game. The Tribe posted five runs on four hits in the fourth to cut the Towson lead to two. William & Mary added two runs on one hit and two errors in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at seven apiece. Towson retook a two-run lead in the top of the sixth, scoring one run on Jeremy Wagner's RBI fielder's choice and another on Casey Bishop's infield single to second base. Max Simpson came on in the seventh and shut down the Tribe to the tune of two hits and one walk surrendered with two strikeouts in the final three frames to end the Tigers' CAA skid with a 9-7 victory over the Tribe.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson reliever Luis Rivera (1-3) earned his first win of the season after surrendering one hit and one walk in 1.2 innings pitched. Rivera struck out two batters. Max Simpson (3) nailed down the three-inning save, allowing two hits and one walk, adding three strikeouts in the appearance.
  • William & Mary reliever Mark Hindy (5-3) took the loss, surrendering two unearned runs on four hits with four strikeouts in the 4.0 inning outing.
  • The Tigers outhit the Tribe 14-8 in the game, with four Tigers picking up multiple hits in the game. Elijah Dickerson batted 3-for-6, Taye Robinson went 2-for-4, Cole Stefano batted 2-for-4 and Casey Bishop finished 3-for-4.
 
How it Happened:
  • Towson started the scoring in the top of the second inning, starting with three straight singles from Taye Robinson, Jack Lawrence and Cole Stefano. All three runners advanced on a wild pitch to score the first run of the game. Jeremy Wagner's RBI fielder's choice and Casey Bishop's RBI sacrifice bunt scored two more in the frame.
  • With runners on the corners in the top of the third, Stefano's single to left knocked in a run. Brian Heckelman, Wagner and Bishop each followed with RBI singles to make it a 7-0 Towson advantage.
  • William & Mary answered in the bottom of the fourth with five runs on four hits to pull within two.
  • The Tribe tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on one hit and two errors.
  • In the top of the sixth, back-to-back singles from Bryce Frederick and Robinson along with Stefano's HBP, the bases were loaded. Jeremy Wagner reached on a fielder's choice, driving in a run. Bishop followed with an infield single to second base to make it a 9-7 game.
  • Max Simpson came on to start the seventh and worked through some traffic on the base paths to maintain a two-run lead.
  • Simpson surrendered one hit and issued one walk in the final two frames but held the Tribe scoreless to secure the 9-7 victory at Plumeri Park.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Jeremy Wagner picked his seventh multiple RBI game of the season with three RBIs on the afternoon. Casey Bishop registered his first mutli-RBI game of the season, finishing the day with three.
  • Cole Stefano extended his hitting streak to eight games, the third longest of any Tiger this season.
  • Max Simpson picked up his third save of the season in his third scoreless outing of the season.
  • Luis Rivera registered his first win in four decisions this season.
