TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team began its final Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series of the season Thursday afternoon vs. North Carolina A&T. The Aggies (25-27, 9-16 CAA) posted seven runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-2 win over the Tigers (14-39, 4-20 CAA) at John B. Schuerholz Park
Jeremy Wagner's double down the right field line in the bottom of the second drove in
Brian Heckelman from second, giving Towson a 1-0 lead. After holding the lead through the fourth inning, North Carolina A&T posted seven runs on five hits and two errors in the frame.
Jordan Peyton responded in the bottom half with a lead-off home run to left field. North Carolina A&T's Wood answered back with a lead-off home run in the next frame, making it an 8-2 game. Towson challenged with two base runners in the eighth that were left stranded. The Tigers went down in order in the final frame for an 8-2 final in the series opener.
Key Stats:
- Towson starter Andrew Luczak (0-7) took the loss with five runs allowed, four earned, on three hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. Luczak struck out a season-high six batters in the start.
- North Carolina A&T starter Coley Kilpatrick (7-3) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits and three walks in the complete game. Kilpatrick added three strikeouts.
How it Happened:
- Brian Heckelman led off the bottom of the second inning with a four-pitch walk. Following Josh Janove's sacrifice bunt, Jeremy Wagner's double down the right field line scored Heckelman for a 1-0 Tiger lead.
- In the top of the fifth, a single and walk put runners on base. An errant throw on a bunt-single to follow tied the game at one. A passed ball gave the Aggies a one-run lead. Williams' bases-loaded single to center extended the lead. The Aggies scored four more runs in the frame on a bases-loaded walk, and two RBI singles.
- Jordan Peyton hit a lead-off home run in the home half to make it a 7-2 game.
- A&T's Wood hit a lead-off home run in the next frame to give the Aggies a six-run lead.
- The Tigers challenged in the eighth inning with a pair of singles but both runners were left stranded.
- Towson went down in order in the bottom of the ninth for an 8-2 final at Schuerholz Park.
