HAMPTON, Va. – Towson softball got another big day at the plate with
Isabella Canesi driving in three runs in a 5-3 win against Hampton on Friday to take the series. The Tigers never trailed in the contest with Canesi driving in the first runs of the game in the third inning.
Towson (22-31, 10-16 CAA) had 12 hits in the game with two extra base hits. Senior
Mackenzie Lake hit her 200
th career hit in the fifth inning on a single to right.
Key Stats:
- Three Tigers recorded multi-hit games with Grace Franczyk going 3-4 from the plate. Lake and Canesi each had two hits with Canesi driving in three of the five runs.
- Cori Jones had a hit and an RBI for the Tigers on Friday. Eight different Tigers had a hit in the game.
- Starter Maddie Gardner picked up a complete game for her fifth win of the season. She struck out four allowing four hits with two walks.
How It Happened:
- Towson would threaten in the second inning by loading the bases, but a ground out would end the threat.
- The Tigers broke through in the third. Cara Bohner reached on a two-out single before Grace Franczyk and Addie Ferguson also singled to load the bases. Isabella Canesi then ripped a two-RBI single to center to put Towson in front 2-0.
- Senior Mackenzie Lake would lead off the fifth with a single. That hit gave her 200 hits during her career with the Tigers.
- The Pirates would respond with a solo home run in the fifth to cut the Tiger lead to 2-1 into the sixth.
- Towson added to their lead with Kristin Toland scoring on an error and Cori Jones driving in Elizabeth Yoskowitz to make it 4-1 in the sixth.
- Hampton continued to fight back, cutting the deficit to 4-3 with two runs in their half of the sixth.
- The Tigers would get another on a Canesi RBI single that scored Naila Neely to make it 5-3.
- That would be all the Tigers would need, as starter Maddie Gardner went the distance for her fifth win of the season on Friday.
