Groseibl’s First Career Goal Propels Towson Women’s Soccer over UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. – The Towson University soccer team took on the UMBC Retrievers on Sunday night. Towson (1-1-0) defeated the Retrievers (0-1-0) 1-0 on Monday afternoon to pick up its first win of the season.
 
The Tigers were able to hold off early pressure from the Retrievers before Rebecca Groseibl found the back of the net from 35 yards out at the end of the first half. Towson continued to hold strong in the second half, getting a career-high ten saves from Riley Melendez to win 1-0.

How It Happened vs UMBC:
  • The game started with the Retrievers applying early pressure, but Riley Melendez held them scoreless by making four saves in the first ten minutes.
  • Rebecca Groseibl registered Towson's first shot after she fired a shot from 25 yards out, but Abbey Cowels saved it.
  • The match was suspended due to inclement weather at the 31:16

  • Towson was able to hold off the Retrievers and pick up a 1-0 win for its first of the 2024 campaign.

  • Riley Melendez now holds the program record in career shutouts with 29. 
  • Towson now leads the all-time series 13-7-3. The Tigers are unbeaten in the last 14 games, which includes 11 victories.
