Field Hockey Falls to Mountaineers in 2024 Season Opener

BOONE, N.C. – The Towson University field hockey opened their season against Appalachian State on Friday. The Mountaineers would score one early and add two more late to win 3-0.

  • Towson – 0-1, 0-0 CAA
  • Appalachian State – 1-0, 0-0 MAC
How it Happened
  • Charlotte Bosma capped off a long period of App State possession, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead with just three minutes left in the first quarter.
  • The Tigers got a great chance to tie the game midway through the second when Lexi Bove was played in on goal, but her shot was denied by App State goalkeeper Claire Grenis.
  • The score would remain 1-0 at the half with Tessa Scheenstra finishing the half with three saves.
  • Midway through the third quarter App state was denied a second thanks to a clutch double save from Scheenstra.
  • Scheenstra stayed hot throughout the third recording five saves in the quarter.
  • App State broke through with under a minute left in the third after three consecutive corners led to a Grace Ball goal. The game would enter the fourth quarter with the Mountaineers up 2-0.
  • Towson would win a corner midway through the fourth, however shots from Anouk Westerink and Tatum Dobbins were stopped by a block and a save respectively.
  • With three and a half minutes left in the game Samantha Connors extended App State's lead to three.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Scheenstra finished the game with nine saves, the most she has recorded in a season opener in her collegiate career.
Next Up:
  • The Tigers have one more game this weekend as they take on Davidson on Sunday at 12 PM.
