Field Hockey Shuts Out Queens to Get Back to .500

Towson, Md. – The Towson University Field Hockey team closed out their third week of play against the Queens Royals. A great all-around performance from the Tigers ended with a 4-0 win.
Record:
Towson - 3-3
Queens - 0-6
Key Stats: How it Happened:
  • Fiene Valkenburg opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game when she carried the ball down the left sideline found the bottom corner of the Queens net.
  • The Tigers lead doubled when Shannon Quaile collected a saved shot and found Lexi Bove who scored her second goal of the season.
  • Midway through the second, Valkenburg regained possession and passed to Lydia Bennett, who turned and found Anouk Westerink who would increase Towson's lead to three.
  • Five minutes before half, Westerink looked to add a second but was denied by a kick save from Madison Destefano.
  • With less than two minutes left in the third, Towson earned a penalty stroke, but Kristin Strijdom's shot was knocked aside by Destefano.
  • With under ten seconds left in the third quarter. Madisyn Howard pushed the ball down the line and found Sarah Salameh whose cross was met by Bove who made it 4-0 Towson.
  • Early in the fourth quarter, a good save from Destefano again denied Westerink a second goal.
  • The Tigers defended multiple corners in the final few minutes to preserve the shutout and the game ended 4-0.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Today was the Tigers first non-conference shutout since Sept. 26, 2021, in a 1-0 win over LIU.
Next Up:
  • Towson opens conference play on Friday as they close their five game home stand when they host Delaware on Friday Sept. 20, at 3 p.m. at the TU Field Hockey Complex.
