Field Hockey Falls in Conference Opener

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University Field Hockey team began conference play as they hosted the Delaware Blue Hens. A Blue Hens goal midway through the fourth quarter was the difference as Delaware took the 1-0 win.
Records:
  • Towson: 3-4, 0-1 CAA
  • Delaware: 3-3, 1-0 CAA
Key Stats:
  • Freshman Anouk Westerink registered Towson's only shot on goal out of seven total Tiger shots.
  • Tessa Scheenstra had four saves in the loss.
  • For Delaware, Valentina Martorell scored the game's only goal off an assist from Lulu Fulton; Cecile Van Eijck picked up the win with one save.
How it Happened:
  • Late in the first, Delawares Kate Janssen brought the ball into the middle of the circle, but Tessa Scheenstra turned it aside.
  • Early in the second corner, Anouk Westerink and Sarah Hatfield both put shots just wide of the net within 30 seconds of each other.
  • Scheenstra would make two saves in the final three minutes of the second quarter to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.
  • Midway through the third quarter, Towson won its first corner, but a Lexi Bove's attempt to deflect a shot in went across the goal and wide.
  • In the final 30 seconds of the third quarter, Towson drew another corner, but Westerink's shot was kicked away by Cecile Van Eijck; Delaware would then break away in the final ten seconds of the quarter but an Ava Mowrey block and a Scheenstra save kept the third quarter scoreless as well.
  • Delaware finally broke the deadlock midway through the fourth quarter, Lulu Fulton found Valentina Martorell in the circle whose shot found the bottom corner to put the Blue Hens up.
  • In the final minutes of the fourth, a Bove shot went high and a Westerink shot was blocked and the game ended 1-0.
