Westerink's Winner Delivers Field Hockey's First Conference Win

Williamsburg, Va. – The Towson University Field Hockey team took on William & Mary in a Friday morning Coastal Athletic Association match up. An overtime winner from Anouk Westerink delivered Towson's first conference win of the season.

William & Mary – 0-9, 0-1 CAA
 
Key Stats:
  • Westerink scored her team leading fifth goal of the season, with Madisyn Howard providing the assist.
  • Sarah Hatfield scored her fourth goal of the season.
  • Tessa Scheenstra picked up the win with six saves
  • For William & Mary, Sara Bartzen scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Pyper Friedman; Maddie George had five saves in the loss.
 
How it Happened:
  • The first chance of the game came from a Towson corner, but Kristin Strijdom's shot went wide.
  • With four minutes to go in the first, Sarah Hatfield received the ball at the midfield line, carried it all the way to the circle and placed a shot into the bottom corner to give Towson an early lead.
  • Towson won another corner a minute later, but Hatfield's just missed her second goal.
  • With just over a minute left in the second quarter Anouk Westerink was on a fast break and attempted to go around Tribe goalie Maddie George, but George stuck with her and made the save.
  • William & Mary won two corners with less than a second left in the first half, and on the second Sara Bartzen tied the game up going into halftime.
  • Early in the third, William & Mary won multiple corners, two blocks and a defensive save from Shannon Quaile kept the game even.
  • With four minutes remaining in the third, Towson won a corner, but two shots from Westerink were both saved by George.
  • Early in the fourth quarter, William & Mary created an open shot off a Towson turnover, but Tessa Scheenstra kicked the shot away.
  • Westerink had another breakaway opportunity midway through the fourth and again couldn't get around George and her shot went wide.
  • With two and a half minutes left, Westerink again broke away and beat George, but Emme Schwartz was on the goal line to make a defensive save.
  • Thirty seconds later Westerink was again denied by a George save, the fourth quarter would end from there.
  • Midway through overtime Hatfield stole the ball in William & Mary's end and crossed it for Tatum Dobbins, but Dobbins couldn't get the ball over the line.
  • Soon after the Tribe's Darcy Kopsinis broke away one-on-one with Scheenstra, but Scheenstra denied the shot.
  • With under two minutes left in the first overtime period, Madison Howard took the ball off a foul and found Westerink who found the bottom corner of the goal to win the game for Towson.
 
Behind the Numbers:
  • Hatfield's goal puts her into the top ten all-time Towson goal scorers, she is tied for 9th alongside Georgia Beachley and Joann Engestrom with 19 career goals.

  • The Tigers will close out the weekend in Richmond on Sunday taking on the Richmond Spiders at 11 a.m. on ESPN+.
