Field Hockey Falls to Richmond in Overtime

RICHMOND, Va – The Towson University Field Hockey team closed out the weekend in Virginia visiting the Richmond Spiders. An overtime goal saw the Spiders defeat the Tigers 2-1.

Key Stats:
  • Olivia Handelong scored her first goal of the season from a penalty stroke.
  • Tessa Scheenstra had eight saves in the loss.
  • For Richmond Grace Wiggins and Valen Luna Paratore scored goals and Alexa Derr and Clara Larripa picked up assists; Kristen Lake picked up the win with six saves.
 
How It Happened:
  • Richmond won a corner midway through the first quarter, the Spiders passed around the circle before Alexa Derr's shot was tipped in by Grace Wiggins to open the scoring.
  • Richmond had two opportunities within a minute to double their lead but were denied by Scheenstra and a defensive save from Megan Popp.
  • Four minutes into the second quarter, Towson was awarded a penalty stroke, which Olivia Handelong converted to tie the game at one.
  • With four minutes remaining in the first half, the Tigers won a corner, but shots from Lexi Bove and Olivia Miller were saved by Spider goalie Kristen Rake.
  • Early in the third, Richmond turned the ball over and Sarah Hatfield found Anouk Westerink, but Rake kicked the shot away.
  • Midway through the third Lexi Bove passed the ball across Richmond's goal from a Towson corner. Olivia Miller's shot squeezed under Rake's stick before being cleared away at the goal line by a Spider defender. It was initially ruled a goal but was overturned after official review.
  • Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, Richmond entered Towson's circle from the right side and Scheenstra saved two shots within a second of each other to keep the game even.
  • Midway through the fourth it was Richmond's turn to have a goal overturned after review. Valen Luna Paratore seemed to have scored from a Spider corner, but the officials looked it over and ruled it out. From there the game would go to overtime.
  • Two minutes into the first overtime period, Richmond had a breakaway chance from a Towson corner, but Scheenstra kicked the shot away.
  • A minute later Richmond won another corner, and Clara Larripa found Luna Paratore who scored the winning goal.
 
Next Up:
  • The Tigers return to the TU Field Hockey Complex Friday October 4th, they will host the Drexel Dragons at 3:00 p.m.
