TOWSON, Md. – On August 14, 2023, Towson University wide receiver
Sam Reynolds went to bed like any other night. While sleeping, he suffered sudden cardiac arrest - the sudden loss of all heart activity due to an irregular heart rhythm that without immediate treatment can lead to death. His breathing stopped and he became unconscious. Reynolds got treatment and was rushed to St. Joseph's Medical Center where he was placed in a medically induced coma to help protect his brain from severe injury.
Remarkably, Reynolds was back on campus for the start of the fall semester less than two weeks after the incident and announced his desire to return to the playing field.
However, the road to recovery was not that easy. In January, he received care at the Mayo Clinic then went through extensive rehabilitation with the Towson University Sports Medicine team before returning to the field.
When the Tigers opened up play for the 2024 season at Cincinnati on August 31,
Sam Reynolds was on the field – 651 days after his last game back in November 2022 – and 55 weeks after nearly losing his life.
This week's Student-Athlete Spotlight takes a look at Reynolds and his miracle comeback story.
