Johnston’s Jumper with 1.8 Seconds Remaining Completes Towson’s Comeback over UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Towson University women's basketball team faced UNCW in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C. on Sunday afternoon. Despite the Seahawks (7-8, 1-1 CAA) holding the lead for more than 34 minutes in the game, India Johnston hit a jumper for the Tigers (3-10, 1-1 CAA) with 1.8 seconds remaining in regulation to take a one-point lead. Semaya Turner secured a steal on the final play and ran out the clock for the victory.
 
Jordan Wakefield finished with a game-high 18 points on 75.0% (6-8) shooting. Aminata Diakite added 11 points and five rebounds, all offensive.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers built a 9-6 lead through the first 3:30 of the game. Wakefield led with five points while Johnston and Deja Bristol added two each.
  • UNCW closed the opening quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 12-9 lead into the first break.
  • The Seahawks opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run to build their lead to eight.
  • Diakite hit the next two Tiger buckets of the game, with the second cutting the deficit to six at 21-15.
  • A 12-6 UNCW run over the next 4:47 pushed their lead to 33-20.
  • The Black & Gold finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to six points at the halftime break.
  • Turner had the first four points of the second half from either team, hitting a jumper and two free throws.
  • With 5:53 left in the third, UNCW's Dobson hit a three and was assessed a technical foul moments later for taunting. Wakefield hit a pair of technical free throws to cut the deficit to seven at 44-37.

  • Off another Seahawk miss with eight seconds remaining, Wakefield secured the rebound and hit Johnston on the outlet pass who hit a running jumper with 1.8 seconds on the clock.
  • Turner secured a steal off the inbound pass and held the ball in the final 1.8 to secure the Tiger victory at Trask Coliseum.

  • Wakefield finished with a season-high 18 points, her most in a game since Dec. 6, 2021, against Norfolk State while with George Mason. She added eight rebounds.
  • Diakite finished with 11 points, five offensive rebounds and a career-high three steals.
  • Johnston finished in double-digits for the eighth time this season.
