Westerink's Brace Earns Field Hockey a 2-0 Conference Start

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team played its second Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) game of the season against William & Mary on Friday. A brace from Anouk Westerink delivered the Tigers a 2-0 win and the Tigers first 2-0 conference start as a CAA member.

How it Happened:
  • The Tigers quickly seized control of the game in the first quarter and three minutes in Anouk Westerink carried down the right sideline and into the Tribe's circle and fired a shot that required the games first save from Alexandra de Jesus.
  • With five minutes left in the quarter the Tigers won the ball in William & Mary's half and Ella Kaufman played a ball into the circle that Olivia Miller ran on to and shot, de Jesus made the save but the ball went straight to Anouk Westerink who scored to put Towson ahead 1-0 after the first period.
  • Towson won a corner less than a minute into the second quarter, Dakotah Trader delivered to Rosemarie Staal who laid it off for Westerink who carried to her right before shooting into the top corner of the goal to double Towson's lead.
  • William & Mary earned its first corner midway through the second period and Amelia Morgan's shot was saved by Tessa Scheenstra, the ensuing Tiger counter saw a pass find Tatum Dobbins in the center of the circle whose shot was saved by de Jesus.
  • Towson won one more corner before the half and both Staal's top of the circle shot and Megan Popp's follow up were kept out by de Jesus as Towson took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
  • It was the Tribes turn to start a half in control in the third quarter highlighted by a pair of corners in the first three minutes of the third period that saw both Emme Schwartz and Josie Mae Gruendel denied goals by Scheenstra.
  • Towson's only chance of the quarter came at its midway point when a Westerink pass into the circle was deflected wide of the post by Ella Kaufman as the Tiger's 2-0 lead held entering the fourth quarter.
  • William & Mary won multiple corners again in the fourth quarter, but the Tiger defense kept any shots from reaching the goal.
  • Another blocked corner saw the Tigers start a three on one fast break and a pass from the right side into the center of the circle was met by Kaufman, but de Jesus denied her Towson's third goal and the game ended in a 2-0 Towson win.

The Tigers close out the weekend at the TU Field Hockey Complex on Sunday at noon against Saint Francis.
