Field Hockey Suffers OT Loss to Saint Francis

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team hosted Saint Francis in a nonconference game on Sunday. A 2-2 game went into overtime before Saint Francis scored the winner in the first extra period to defeat the Tigers 3-2.

  • Rosemarie Staal scored her fourth goal of the season.

  • For Saint Francis: Sofia Marciano scored twice, Brooklyn Widdess had a goal, and Cruz Canepa had an assist. Mia DiGenova earns the win allowing two goals with six saves.
 
How it Happened:
  • Towson created the first big chance of the game as the ball came down the right sideline and was passed in front of the goal to Alaina Lomonaco, her shot was saved by Mia DiGenova.
  • The Tigers then earned a pair of corners the second of which saw Rosemarie Staal's shot blocked by a Red Flash defender but the ball fell to Olivia Miller who shot into the top of the goal to give Towson a 1-0 lead after the first period.
  • Saint Francis earned multiple corners early in the second quarter that both saw Madison Waldspurger denied an equalizing goal by Tessa Scheenstra.
  • Midway through the quarter, Saint Francis earned another corner and Scheenstra saved a pair of shots but couldn't save the third effort as Brooklyn Widdess scored to tie the game at one.
  • Towson won a corner with under two minutes left in the half and Olivia Handelong's delivery was controlled by Staal whose shot found the bottom corner of the goal to give Towson a 2-1 halftime lead.
  • Saint Francis received the first corner of the second half and Cruz Canepa delivered to Sofia Marciano who shot and scored to again bring the game level.
  • DiGenova saved an open play shot from Anouk Westerink and an Ella Kaufman shot from a Towson corner as the game remained tied entering the fourth quarter.
  • Possession went back-and-forth in the fourth period, and the first major chance didn't come until the final few minutes when a Towson corner saw Staal's initial shot blocked, and Miller's second effort saved.
  • With under 90 seconds left in the period Olivia Miller received a ten-minute yellow card putting the Tigers a player down for the rest of the fourth quarter and the first eight and a half minutes of the ensuing overtime period.
  • Three minutes into the first overtime period, a downfield pass from the Red Flash found Marciano who created space from a Tiger defender and shot, Scheenstra got her pads to the ball but couldn't keep it out of the goal and Saint Francis earned a 3-2 overtime win.
