BOX SCORE LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Towson University tennis team picked up a 5-2 win on the road on Monday against Rider.
The Tigers opened strong by sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the opening point. In singles play, sophomore Gaia Montecchi battled to a hard-fought victory at the No. 1 flight, 6-3, 7-5. Tamzin Pountney (No. 3) and Ashira Murray (No. 4) each delivered dominant performances in super tiebreakers, both prevailing 10-8 to add to Towson's lead. Sania Suchinsky picked up another win at No. 5 in straight sets.
"This match was close," said head coach Jamie Peterson. "We secured the doubles point, which helped. Gaia Montecchi stepped up and won the last three games of her match to put us up 3-1, and Tamzin Pountney closed out the match with a 10-8 win in the third set breaker! Three singles matches went to super breakers 10-8 and we won two. I like the sound of 1-0."
