Field Hockey Falls to Delaware

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team hosted Delaware in a nonconference matchup on Friday. A defensive struggle saw the Tigers fall to the Blue Hens by a score of 1-0.

How it Happened:
  • Delaware earned six penalty corners throughout the first period. Multiple shots were blocked, and Iris Bekker was twice denied a goal by Tessa Scheenstra as the game remained scoreless entering the second quarter.
  • Midway through the second quarter, the Blue Hen's stole the ball in Towson's half and quickly carried into the right side of the circle before a ball across the goal was met by Noelle Sabbagh whose near-post shot was knocked away by Scheenstra.
  • Delaware received a corner with three minutes left in the half and the delivery went straight to Sabbagh who shot to the back post and was denied by a Lydia Bennett defensive save.
  • Two more Blue Hen corners failed to yield the game's first goal as the halftime score read 0-0.
  • Delaware started the second half firmly in control of possession and five minutes into the period forced a Towson turnover in the midfield and a the ball came to Alexa Michielsen who carried to the top of the circle and saw her ball towards goal deflected by a Towson defender, but the deflection fell to Livia van't Hek who carried around Scheenstra and scored to make it 1-0 Delaware.
  • The Tigers won possession, and a long pass found Bailey Masten who carried into the circle, but her shot was knocked away by a Delaware defender as the score remained 1-0 entering the final period.
  • Scheenstra twice denied Michielsen and stopped a Kate Fiest effort in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to keep Towson within one.
  • With under two minutes to go Towson held possession outside the Delaware circle, Bennett played a ball to Dakotah Trader in front of goal whose deflection shot was saved by Blue Hen goalie Kristi Merashoff who also blocked Arden Hunteman's follow up attempt.
  • The Tigers earned a corner from the play, the delivery was laid off to Roos Wiarda who played a ball towards goal that was deflected just out of bounds by Hunteman and the game ended in a 1-0 Towson loss.

The Tigers are back in TU Field Hockey Complex on Sunday to host Georgetown on Senior Day, the game will be starting at noon.
