Stony Brook Completes Comeback over Volleyball at SECU Arena

TOWSON, Md. -- The Towson University volleyball team faced the Stony Brook Seawolves to open the final home series of the regular season on Friday evening at SECU Arena.
 
After winning the opening set 25-20, Towson (20-4, 11-2 CAA) squandered a 19-10 lead in set two, allowing Stony Brook (9-11, 5-6 CAA) to tie the score at one set apiece. The Seawolves went on to win the final two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-20, respectively, securing their first win over Towson in series history.
 
Key Stats:
  • Despite holding advantages in kills, assists and sets, the Tigers had eight attacking errors in three of four sets. The Seawolves were limited to seven or less in all four sets.
  • The Seawolves held hitting percentage advantage in all three sets they won.

How it Happened
  • Addison Leber put Towson up 5-1 early in the first set, totaling four kills through the Tigers' first five points.
  • The Seawolves got within three at 12-9 before back-to-back kills from Erin Brothers and a Stony Brook attack error pushed the Tiger lead to six.
  • SBU responded with a three-point run of their own before the Tigers did the same, taking the score to 18-12. Ella Sanders had two kills in the subsequent run for TU.
  • The Seawolves cut the deficit to three again at 21-18 before kills from Brothers and Sanders, plus a Maisie Jesse service ace gave the Tigers their first set point opportunity at 24-18.
  • A Sanders kill from Jesse gave the Tigers the 25-20 win in set one.
  • The second set started with consecutive sideouts before the Seawolves scored three unanswered points to take an 8-6 lead.
  • Down 9-7, the Tigers ripped off nine straight points to reclaim the lead at 16-9.
  • Moments later, another three-point run put the Tigers up 19-10.
  • Stony Brook responded with six unanswered points to pull back within three.
  • Down 23-20 later in the set, the Seawolves closed the frame on a five-point run to tie the match at one set apiece.
  • Kills by Leber, Brothers and Sarah Callender gave the Tigers an early 5-4 lead in the third set.
  • Stony Brook won seven of the next nine points to take an 11-7 lead.
  • Down four, two kills from Leber, plus a Callender kill and service ace pulled Towson within one at 13-12.
  • Tied 15 all, the teams exchanged three point runs to get the score to 18 all.
  • The Seawolves scored six of the next eight points to get their first set point opportunity at 24-20.
  • The Tigers scored three-straight points to pull the deficit to one before a Kali Moore kill gave Stony Brook a two-sets to one lead.
  • The Seawolves won 11 of the first 14 points of set four to take a commanding 11-3 lead.
  • The Tigers responded with wins on five of the next six points, shrinking the deficit to four.
  • Stony Brook pushed their lead back to six before Towson scored three straight to pull back within three at 15-12.
  • The Seawolves closed the set on a 10-8 run, securing the team's first win in series history vs. Towson.
