Towson Women’s Lacrosse Wins Double Overtime Thriller over Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Towson University women's lacrosse team traveled to the nation's capital to take on the Georgetown Hoyas on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers (1-1) defeated the Hoyas (1-1) 10-9 in double overtime.
 
Valerie Thompson registered her first collegiate hat trick and added an assist to have a career-high four points. Milana Zizakovic had two goals and an assist while Katie Roszko tallied two goals.
 
Key Stats vs Georgetown:
  • Jenna Cardeno finished with a season-high 15 saves, including two in overtime.
  • Towson went three-of-five from free position shots while Georgetown went two-of-seven.
  • The Tigers totaled ten caused turnovers.
 
How It Happened vs. Georgetown:
  • Valerie Thompson scored her third goal of the season on a free position attempt to give Towson an early lead.
  • Towson doubled its lead 16 seconds later when Savannah Safchuck scored her second goal of the year on a feed from Shannon Sullivan to lead 2-0 at 6:39 mark.
  • The Hoyas cut the lead in half less than a minute later when Gracie Driggs scored her third goal of the season.
  • Georgetown evened the score before the end of the first quarter to be tied at two heading into the second quarter.
  • Halley Koras gave the Tigers the lead back to start the second quarter with her second goal of the season.
  • The Hoyas scored back-to-back free position goals to have a 4-3 lead midway through the second quarter.
  • Katie Roszko tied the score at four when she fired a shot past Warehime on a pass from Koras for her third goal of the season.
  • Georgetown regained the lead on an Anne McGovern goal, but Ocea Leavy scored a free position goal to tie the game at five heading into halftime.
  • The Hoyas opened the third quarter by scoring two quick goals to have a two-goal advantage.
  • Milana Zizakovic cut the lead in half with her first goal of the season after Thompson found Zizakovic open who then fired a shot near post that beat Warehime.
  • Georgetown pushed its lead back to two, but the Tigers got goals from Thompson and Zizakovic to even the score at eight heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Thompson completed her hat trick when she scored a free position attempt to give Towson a 9-8 edge early in the fourth quarter.
  • The Hoyas tied the score at nine with 7:26 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • The teams went back-and-forth, but neither team found the back of the net which forced overtime.
  • Georgetown won the draw to open overtime, but Jenna Cardeno made her 14th save to keep the score tied.
  • On the following possession, Hailey Waldron's shot went wide of the post as the Tigers looked for the winning goal.
  • Cardeno came up big again, making her 15th save to deny the Hoyas. The Tigers had a chance at the end of the first overtime, but couldn't get a shot off as the game went into double overtime.
  • Roszko won the draw control to give Towson the first possession of double overtime. Zizakovic found Roszko cutting to the crease who fired a shot near post that beat Warehime to seal a 10-9 win for the Tigers.
