CONWAY, S.C. – The Towson University softball team began the Battle at the Beach as it faced the Kent State Golden Flashes on Friday. Despite homeruns from
Kristin Toland and
Taylor Broadbent the Tigers fell to the Flashes 9-6.
Key Stats:
- Kristin Toland hit a two-run homerun, her second of the season as well as an RBI single.
- Taylor Broadbent was a triple shy of the cycle with a single, double and her first collegiate home run.
- Madyson Peters had two RBI singles, and Jenna Giattino (2), Grace Franczyk and Anaya Troy also picked up hits.
- Freshman Olivia Trombley started on the mound pitching 3.0 innings allowing five hits and two earned runs.
- Alyssa Bostley pitched 2.2 innings of relief allowing 6 earned runs with 2 strikeouts in the loss.
- For Kent State: Savannah Wing hit a homerun and was one of five Kent State batters to record multiple hits. Aaralyn Nogay finished with three RBIs and Delaney Robeson knocked in two. Delaney Nagy started and threw 5.1 innings allowing six hits and four earned runs. Ella Johnson picked up the win throwing 0.2 innings of relief.
How it Happened:
- Jenna Giattino led off the game with a single, which ended up being the only hit of the first inning for either team.
- Olivia Trombley only faced six batters in the first two innings highlighted by a 5-4 pop out double play in the second inning.
- Kent State struck first in the bottom of the 3rd as Savannah Wing led off the inning with a solo home run.
- Two singles and a throwing error loaded the bases with zero outs in the 3rd, then an Aaralyn Nogay fielder's choice and a Delany Robeson single added two more runs in the inning to put the Flashes up 3-0.
- Towson responded the next inning as Taylor Broadbent hit her first collegiate homerun to put the Tigers on the board.
- However, in the bottom half of the 4th Kent State put runners on the corners with two outs and Carley Penner singled through the right side to restore the Flash's three-run lead.
- The Tigers rallied in the top of the 6th as Broadbent led off with a double then scored on a Madyson Peters single before Kristin Toland hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 4.
- Two Kent State singles and a groundout put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the 6th. The Flashes then saw consecutively a Nogay triple, a Robeson single, a Katie Jo Moery double and a Kendal Leitner single score five runs to make it 9-4 Kent State.
- Giattino and Broadbent led off the top of the 7th with a pair of singles and both scored on another pair of singles by Peters and Toland. But Kent State closed the game from there and the Tigers fell 9-6.
