TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team hosted UMBC in the team's home opener Wednesday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park.
After Towson got out to a one-run lead in the bottom of the first, UMBC scored four in the top of the second. The Tigers cut into the deficit with one run each in the third and seventh innings before UMBC added another run in the top of the eighth. The Tigers got one back in the home half, but couldn't score in the final frame to extend the game for a 5-4 loss.
Key Stats
- Towson starter Jacob Whiteman (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks in 1.2 innings pitched.
- UMBC reliever Emmett Tolis (1-0) recorded the win, tossing 2.2 hitless frames with five strikeouts. Nick Remy earned the save out of the bullpen, allowing one hit in the final frame with one strikeout.
How it Happened
- In the bottom of the first, Jordan Peyton reached on an error before Nich Francuzenko singled through the right side to put Peyton on third. Taye Robinson knocked Peyton in on a sacrifice fly to center field to put Towson in front early.
- UMBC responded in the next frame, tying the game on Derek Paris' double to left center field, putting runners on second and third. Buscaglia's groundout to follow gave UMBC a one-run lead. Later in the frame with the bases loaded, Ong singled up the middle to bring home two more and extend the Retrievers' lead to three.
- With Peyton on third in the bottom of the third, Robinson reached on an error. That allowed Peyton to score from third and cut the deficit to two.
- The fourth, fifth and sixth innings were scoreless on both sides. The next score came from Towson in the bottom of the seventh. Cole Stefano singled to center, followed by Brian Heckelman's RBI triple to left center field, which cut the deficit to one.
- The Retrievers tacked on another run in the top of the eighth by way of Orr's single through the left side with a runner on second base.
- With two on in the home half, back-to-back wild pitches advanced the runners, cutting the Retriever lead to one once more.
- Ethan Brand hit a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth before the final batter was retired for a 5-4 UMBC victory.

The Tigers begin a three-game series against Holy Cross on Saturday, with game one of the doubleheader set for an 11 a.m. start.
