SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Towson University Softball team opened its 50
th season with the first two games of the Terrier Invite hosted by Wofford. The Tigers defeated Youngstown State 13-3 behind an eight-run 4
th inning to start the day but fell to Wofford 4-3 despite a 6
th inning rally.
GAME ONE: Towson 13, Youngstown State 3
Key Stats:
- Briyana Wright (2), Taylor Broadbent (2), Cara Bohner (2) and Madyson Peters (3) all had multiple hits.
- Wright (3), Broadbent (2), Bohner (2) and Kristin Toland (2) all had multiple RBI's.
- Broadbent, Peters and Alyssa Myint also drove in runs.
- Grace Franczyk, Myint and Toland all picked up hits.
- Paige Kostick walked in all three at bats.
- Wright (3), Myint (2), Toland (2) and Kostick (2) all had multiple runs scored.
- Amanda Medina started on the mound and picked up the win allowing three runs over four innings.
- Freshman Kayla Pilson made her first career appearance throwing a hit-less inning of relief
- For the Penguins, Taylor Truran drove in two and Autumn Boyd took the loss allowing four runs in three innings pitched.
How it Happened:
- Briyana Wright led the season off with her first hit as a Tiger and was later driven in by a Grace Franczyk RBI ground-out to give Towson the early lead.
- Youngstown State responded in the back half of the 1st as two singles and a fielder's choice were followed by Taylor Truran's two-run single to put the Penguins ahead after one.
- The Tigers struck right back in the second inning starting with three straight walks to load the bases. Wright reaching on a fielder's choice combined with a throwing error put Towson back ahead 3-2 before a Cara Bohner two-run single pushed the lad to 5-2.
- A L63 double play nixed a Youngstown lead-off walk in the bottom of the second.
- Bree Kholer cut the deficit to two with an RBI single in the third.
- The top of the fourth began with a Taylor Broadbent double and a Bohner walk. Franczyk and Madyson Peters both drove in runs with singles followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from Alyssa Myint and Kristin Toland to make it 10-3 Tigers.
- A Wright two-run triple and a Broadbent RBI single capped off an eight-run fourth inning from the Tigers.
- Peters would be the only player to get a hit the rest of the game as Towson claimed the 13-3 victory after five innings.
GAME TWO: Towson 3, Wofford 4
Key Stats:
- Madyson Peters had two hits with Cara Bohner, Isabella Canesi and Kaci Benton picking up the rest of the Tiger's five total hits.
- Bohner drove in two runs for the second straight game.
- Freshman Olivia Trombley made her first collegiate start pitching five innings allowing five hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts and did not factor in the decision.
- Alyssa Bostley picked up the loss allowing one run and two hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
- For Wofford, Margaret Axelson took the win pitching a complete game allowing five hits and one earned run over the seven innings while striking out seven. Havalynn Abernathy and Brianna Stanley had two RBI's each with Stanley's seventh inning single providing the Terriers the walk-off victory.
How it Happened:
- The Terriers struck first in the bottom of the first with a lead-off single and walk leading to a Havalynn Abernathy RBI ground-out and Brianna Stanley sac-fly to give Wofford the early 2-0 lead.
- Madyson Peters picked up Towson's first hit of the game in the second.
- Olivia Trombley recorded her first collegiate strikeout in the bottom of the second.
- Wofford led off the bottom of the third with a bunt single before advancing the runner on a ground-out, followed by an Abernathy single to push the Terriers lead to three.
- Isabella Canesi and Peters hit back-to-back singles to lead off the fifth, but a double play the next batter staved off the rally.
- Freshman Kaci Benton pinch hit to lead off the sixth and recorded her first career hit, two batters later another pinch hitter, Addie Ferguson, reached on an error before both runners advanced on a passed ball.
- Cara Bohner then hit a sharp single up the middle to score both runners and advanced to second on the throw. Bohner moved to third on a Grace Franczyk ground-out before scoring as Canesi reached on an error to tie the game at three.
- Alyssa Bostley pitched a scoreless sixth inning, but a one-out walk in the seventh led to Hannah Maddox reaching on a fielder's choice before stealing second. Then Stanley hit a walk-off single to win the game for the Terriers 4-3.

Towson will begin Saturday against Dayton at 10 AM followed by the first of the two seeded games at either 3 PM or 5:30 PM.
