Towson Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to Mount St. Mary’s

TOWSON, Md. –  The Towson University women's lacrosse team opened the 2025 season with a one-goal loss to Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas® Stadium. The Tigers were on the short end of an 11-10 score.

The Tigers used a 4-1 second quarter run to take a 6-4 halftime lead, but the Mount opened the second half with five unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead. Towson battled back to score two goals in the final five minutes to reduce the deficit to 11-10 and had the ball with less than 30 seconds to go with a chance to force overtime.

Katie Roszko, Ocea Leavy and Valerie Thompson each scored two goals for the Tigers, while freshman goalkeeper Jenna Cardeno made 13 saves in her collegiate debut.

How it Happened:

  • Trailing 3-2, Thompson scored unassisted to tie the game 2:41 into the second quarter.
  • Leavy then scored twice to give the home team a 5-4 advantage.
  • Sophomore Hailey Waldron gave the Tigers a two-goal lead with a free position tally with 2:53 before halftime.
  • Cardeno made a highlight reel save on the doorstep with two minutes remaining in the quarter as Towson took a 6-4 lead into the locker rooms.
  • The Mount scored four free position goals during a 5-0 run, including three while up a player, to regain the lead at 9-6 less than 10 minutes into the third quarter.
  • The score was 9-8 after Towson scored 10 seconds into the final period. Zizakovic won the draw to begin the quarter and hit a streaking Roszko.
  • Mount St. Mary's countered with two goals to go up 11-8 and had two chances on one possession to make it a four-goal game but Cardeno denied the Mountaineers on both shots.
  • Goals by Savannah Safchuck and Thompson made it 11-10 with 2:04 remaining.
