SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Towson University Softball team defeated the Youngstown State Penguins 5-2 in its final game of the Terrier Invite. Sixth inning homeruns from
Madyson Peters and
Kristin Toland broke a 2-2 tie and put the Tigers (2-3) ahead for good.
Key Stats:
- Madyson Peters and Kristin Toland hit the first two Towson homeruns of the season.
- Toland and Isabella Canesi had two hits apiece.
- Briyana Wright, Anaya Troy and Taylor Broadbent also picked up hits while Canesi and Elizabeth Yoskowitz each had an RBI.
- Through their first dozen at bats, Peters is 6-12 with a 1.250 OPS and Toland is 5-12 with a 1.450 OPS.
- Amanda Medina made her third start of the season and threw four innings allowing five hits and one run with three strikeouts.
- Kayla Pilson pitched three innings of relief allowing three hits and one unearned run while picking up her first collegiate win.
- For Youngstown State, eight different batters had a hit with Bree Kohler and Reese Campbell-Schaller picking up RBI's. Autumn Behlke started on the mound for the Penguins pitching five innings allowing eight hits and five runs in the loss.
How it Happened:
- In the top of the 1st, Amanda Medina pitched the first of three straight scoreless innings to begin the game.
- The Towson batters struck first in the bottom of the 2nd as Kristin Toland led off with a triple and immediately scored on an Isabella Canesi RBI single. Canesi advanced to second on the throw and later to third on a sacrifice flyout before being knocked home by Elizabeth Yoskowitz to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.
- Youngstown State responded in the 4th, starting the top of the inning with two singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. An RBI fielder's choice by Reese Campbell-Schaller cut Towson's lead in half but Medina avoided any more damage in the inning.
- With Kayla Pilson replacing Medina on the mound in the 5th, the Penguins tied the game as Anya Ray reached on an error then scored from a Bree Kohler double to knot the game up at two.
- Towson then responded in the of the 6th as Madyson Peters led off the inning with the Tigers first home run of the season to restore Towson's lead.
- Grace Franczyk then drew a walk before the next batter, Toland, hit a two-run homerun to push Towson's lead to 5-2.
- Pilson pitched her second straight scoreless inning to end the game and seal a 5-2 Towson victory.

Tiger Softball is back next weekend when Towson heads to Coastal Carolina University for the Battle at the Beach from Friday, Feb. 14-Sunday, Feb. 16 where the Tigers will face Coastal Carolina, Kent State, Marist, and Notre Dame.
