TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team hosted the UMBC Retrievers in its 3
rd annual strikeout cancer game on Tuesday.
Cadence Williams and
Alyssa Bostley delivered the Tiger's first shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory.
Key Stats:
- Seven different Tigers recorded Towson's 7 hits.
- Cara Bohner, Kristin Toland, Madyson Peters and Grace Franczyk each had an RBI.
- Cadence Williams started on the mound and pitched 5.0 shutout innings allowing 3 with 3 strikeouts to earn her first win as a Tiger.
- Alyssa Bostley allowed only 1 hit over the 6th and 7th innings to earn the save.
- For UMBC: The Retriever's 4 hits came from four different players, Kya Matter started on the mound and pitched 5.1 innings allowing 7 hits and 4 runs with 8 strikeouts, Matter also had a double at the dish.
How it Happened:
- The only baserunner in the top of the 1st reached via an error.
- Briyana Wright drew a leadoff walk in the 1st and stole second, but Towson couldn't get on the board in the inning.
- Kya Matter hit a 1-out double in the top of the 2nd, with two outs Catelyn Thrush hit a ball to second base and Towson's infield caught Matter in a run-down between third base and home plate to end the inning.
- Matter allowed a walk and nothing else in the bottom of the second, Cadence Williams sent the Retrievers down in order in the top of the 3rd.
- In the bottom half of the inning, Briyana Wright led off with a triple and the next batter Cara Bohner hit a sac fly to open the scoring. With two outs Grace Franczyk walked and two batters later scored from a Madyson Peters double to put Towson up 2-0.
- Both starters only faced four batters in the 4th inning.
- Williams walked the first two batters in the top of the 5th before retiring the next three to keep UMBC scoreless.
- Kristin Toland led off the bottom of the 5th with a double and the next batter Franczyk hit an RBI single to make it 3-0 Towson.
- An error, walk and Bohner single loaded the bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 6th, Toland hit a groundball to short but beat the throw to first to allow Elizabeth Yoskowitz to score and put Towson ahead 4-0.
- Alyssa Bostley retired the side in order in the 7th to complete 2.0 scoreless innings and earn the save in Towson's 4-0 win.
