Towson Baseball Earns Dominant Win vs. GW, Matches Program Single Game Stolen Base Record

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team took advantage of the beautiful weather on campus, plating 16 runs in a 16-2 mid-week victory over George Washington on Wednesday afternoon.

Towson (5-12) took the advantage early, including five runs in the second and seven runs in the third en route to the win vs. George Washington (8-8).  Towson earned 14 hits and did not commit an error in the game.

Key Stats

  • Max D'Alessandro hit a three-run home run, finishing 1-for-1 with two walks and a run.  Brian Heckelman also homered, going 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
  • The win went to starter Vincent Salvo (1-0), who threw four innings with one run and five strikeouts.  Kyle Emmons and Nate Nabholz each had a scoreless inning of relief.
  • For GW, Greg Marmo homered, having a 2-for-2 day with two runs and a walk.  The loss went to start Brayden Kurtz (0-1), who allowed six runs and struck out three in 1.1 innings.
How it Happened
  • Towson got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first as after Jordan Peyton singled and stole second, Nich Francuzenko doubled in the left-center gap, scoring Peyton for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Tigers notched another quick run in the next inning; after Brett Ahalt singled and stole second, Casey Bishop reached on a bunt single as Ahalt scored on the ensuing throwing error.  A walk then a strikeout, Francuzenko reached on a fielder's choice on a late throw home as Bishop scored.  Next batter, Max D'Alessandro cleared the bases with a home run to left-center and a 6-0 Towson lead.
  • GW got a run on a Greg Marmo home run in the top of the third.  Towson responded with its biggest inning of the game.  On second and third with one out, a wild pitch scored a run, then Peyton singled up the middle on the drawn-in infield to bring in another.  Peyton advanced via wild pitch and scored next batter as Francuzenko hit a single through the right side.  Two hit batters later, Taye Robinson lined a single through the left side to score two more, then Ethan Brand hit a double to the right-center gap.  Towson scored seven runs in the third to lead 13-1.
  • GW again scored in the fifth, and again, Towson responded the next half inning.  D'Alessandro walked, then Brian Heckelman blasted a ball to left-center for a two-run home run.  Towson was not done as Robinson singled, stole second and took third on a throwing error.  Brand brought him home on a single to left as Towson led 16-2.
  • Kyle Emmons and Nate Nabholz finished the game in seven as the Tigers took the 16-2 win.
