Weisshaar OT Goal Sends Towson Men’s Lacrosse to Victory in Offensive Thriller vs. Delaware

TOWSON, Md. – In an absolute thriller to begin Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play, the Towson University men's lacrosse team tied the game with 29 seconds left, then Mikey Weisshaar scored 2:18 into overtime to send the Tigers to a 19-18 victory over rival Delaware on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the action being back-and-forth all game, Towson (2-5, 1-0 CAA) needed a quick goal after Delaware (3-3, 0-1 CAA) scored with 43 seconds to play to lead by one.  Matt Constantinides bullied his way to win the faceoff and dropped off to Joe Meidling, who found Ronan Fitzpatrick on the doorstep for a goal and forced overtime.   2:18 in, Mikey Weisshaar got past his defender for a close range shot and score to send Towson to victory.
 
Towson has now won its last 12 CAA regular season games dating back to 2023.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson outshot Delaware 51-46 in the game, overcoming Delaware's 22-17 lead on faceoffs.
  • Lighting up the scoreboard, Mikey Weisshaar and Ronan Fitzpatrick each scored six goals, with the former adding an assist, two caused turnovers and three ground balls.  Owen Scott and Ryan Schrier each had two goals and an assist.
  • Towson switched between two players on faceoffs, with Matt Constantinides winning 9-of-16 with five ground balls while Kai Lopez was 8-for-23 with three ground balls.
  • The win went to Luke Downs, who had 15 saves and 18 goals allowed in 62:18 of play.  Sam Morin caused turnovers and grabbed four ground balls.
  • For Delaware, Brendan Powers combined for nine points on seven goals and two assists while Bennett Farmers had five assists, adding a goal.  Kevin Ellington had the loss, totaling 17 saves and 19 goals allowed.
How It Happened:
  • Delaware won the first two faceoffs and got off to an early 2-0 lead.  Ronan Fitzpatrick got a second-chance shot on the doorstep and put Towson on the board, but Delaware added two more, sending Towson to call a timeout down 4-1 just over four minutes into the game.
  • After a few minutes and an exchange of goals, Mikey Weisshaar was left open straight away for a laser shot and goal on a man-up situation.  Minutes later, he added another off a screen from Ryan Schrier to pull Towson within one.  Another exchange of goals, as Fitzpatrick pushed through a defender to score, and Towson was down one after one 6-5.
  • Delaware scored the first two goals of the second period to lead by three.  Towson surged forward through the quarter with a 5-0 run in the next eight minutes, beginning with a catch-and-run for Fitzpatrick from Evan BoswellOwen Scott scored his first goal as he shot the ball through traffic and scored, then another minute later, Fitzpatrick added another from Boswell on a shot from the hip in the corner.  Fitzpatrick added yet another as he pushed through a defender for space and scored on a low shot, then Scott hit another on a high bounce shot under the crossbar.  Towson led 10-8 with 3:51 left in the second.
  • Delaware scored the last two of the second for a 10-10 tied game at the half.
  • Having a man-up situation to begin the third, Josh Webber scored on the low shot just as the penalty was expiring.  Nearly five minutes went by without a score as Delaware scored twice in a minute to retake the lead, but Towson countered as Joe Meidling got free off a faceoff win and scored for a 12-12 game midway through the third.
  • Following another exchange of goals, the Blue Hens scored twice in the final five minutes of the third to lead 15-13 after three.
  • The visitors added to their lead to go up three, when Chop Gallagher bull dodged a defender to score and pull Towson back within two.
  • With 7:34 to play, Towson scored three goals in a span of 92 seconds: a Weisshaar spin move to get around a defender , Weisshaar scoring again off a quick pass from Webber and Schrier scoring off a faceoff win and clear from Joe Petro.  Towson led 17-16, but Delaware scored with 4:47 to tie the game.
  • Back and forth the teams exchanged possessions, then Owen McGee scored for Delaware with 43 seconds left.  Matt Constantinides won the faceoff and passed off to Meidling, who found Fitzpatrick on the doorstep for the goal, tying the game.  Towson peppered the goal in the final seconds of regulation but the game went to overtime.
  • Both sides had a turnover as Towson called a timeout two minutes into OT.  Weisshaar got free, running past a defender to have a shot straight away and scored to give Towson the 19-18 golden goal victory.
Inside the Numbers:
  • 37 goals tied the most amount of goals in a Towson men's lacrosse game since the Tigers defeated UMBC 27-15 on Apr. 19, 1996.  Towson had a 37-goal game in a 24-13 America East league win vs. Hartford on Mar. 14, 1998.
  • 37 combined goals are the most amount ever in a Towson-Delaware game.  Twice there were games with 33 combined goals: Towson 20-13 on Apr. 5, 1997 and Delaware 17-16 on Apr. 10, 1999.
  • It is the first time Towson's Division I era, dating back to 1980, where two different Tigers scored at least six goals in a single game.
  • Mikey Weisshaar and Ronan Fitzpatrick earn the most goals in a Towson game since Bode Maurer netted seven goals vs. Drexel on May 2, 2024.
  • Towson has won three straight games against Delaware.
  • Towson has won its last seven home CAA regular season games and last nine games against CAA opponents at Unitas.
